Title: Communications Associate , Sierra Leone

Reports to: Director of Policy and Partnerships in Sierra Leone

Location: Sierra Leone

 

 

General Responsibilities:

 

Partners In Health (PIH) seeks a creative, social justice-oriented professional to lead communications for a growing organization. The Communications Associate will work with PIH colleagues and external partners around the world to broaden and deepen support for PIH.

 

By celebrating the organization’s unique mission and values, showcasing its pioneering accomplishments, and promoting its valuable brand, the Communications Associate will drive forward PIH Sierra Leone’s communications, including through fundraising campaigns, local media engagement, in-country partner engagement, internal communications, and other communications initiatives.

 

As a collaborator with the global Marketing-Communications team, the Communications Associate creates and curates compelling, timely content to advance the global marketing-communications strategy, and acts as a key link between PIH’s work in Sierra Leone and PIH’s global Marketing-Communications team in Boston.

 

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Global Communications

  • Create, implement, and refine a country-specific content strategy and plan that supports the Global Marketing-Communications team
  • Pitch, write, and revise copy for the organization’s print and digital channels
  • Photograph and film work for publication and distribution
  • Coordinate and facilitate reporters’ visits and interviews

 

Internal Engagement 

  • Develop internal communications strategy in partnership with Senior Management Team to help strengthen internal communications structures
  • Lead continued development and deployment of existing internal communications structures (Monday Motivation, Friday Feeling, etc.) and mentor others to take on ownership and execution of these initiatives
  • Promote regular and ongoing opportunities for all staff to give and receive feedback on program operations, including managing annual program planning and quarterly reviews in partnership with MEQ & Admin
  • Proactively propose ways to strengthen internal engagement and manage communication flow effectively across the organization to the Senior Management Team 

 

External & Strategic Communications

  • Develop strategic communications documents for external audiences, including government, partners, potential funders, and others as required
  • Develop and maintain a network of journalists and contacts at regional media outlets—including print, digital, broadcast, and radio and help support increased media presence within Sierra Leonean outlets
  • Support teams in external engagement through content-generation and other communications requests as needed

 

Fundraising & Partnership Development

  • Lead the development of an engagement strategy with key partners and funders with the Director of Policy & Partnerships and broader PIH development team
  • Develop cases for investment in key program areas, including writing narrative, collaborating with Director of Policy & Partnership & Monitoring, Evaluation, & Quality Improvement teams to use and model data
  • Support Director of Policy & Partnership in proposal development on key funding opportunities
  • Produce communications content to enable effective donor stewardship and engagement
  • Support in creation of donor reports on active grants as required and provide mentorship to program managers on report and success story writing
  • Other fundraising & communications projects as requested by management

 

Strategic Projects

  • Provide oversight and management to communications volunteers and interns as required, including to design and help pilot a communications intern program if time allows
  • Support other strategic projects as requested

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, preferably with digital content generation and strategy, branding, marketing-communications, and/or PR
  • Passion for PIH’s mission and interest in global health equity and social justice
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality content by collaborating across departments, countries, and cultures
  • Proven ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders, both internally and externally to the organization
  • Willingness to engage respectfully and professionally with a diverse group while achieving results
  • Demonstrated experience managing, and meeting, multiple deadlines
  • Detail-orientated approach to content creation, with excellent planning and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to self-motivate and implement new communications initiatives with minimal oversight and direction
  • Literacy in Office365, various CMS, and Creative Cloud applications such as InDesign
  • Excellent command of English, with superlative writing and editing skills
