Summary: The Psychiatrist will provide quality psychiatric services in a compassionate and caring environment. Provide clinical assessments and treatment via medication management to patients with mental health disorders in a consultation model to primary care. Serve as liaison with county mental health system to provide appropriate triage of patients to and from the county mental health services. Work closely with other health care staff in a team approach. Work as an integral part of the Medical staff by participating in all strategic initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to after evening hours and assignment to outside locations within PHC federal scope such as school based clinics.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Evaluate, diagnoses, and treats psychiatric disorders, determines appropriate course of treatment and prescribes the appropriate treatment in accordance with DSM and the American Board of Psychiatry
  • Provide care within consultation model to the primary care providers with a goal to provide access to as many primary care patients necessitating consultation as possible
  • Provide “On Call” brief assessment and triage of patients in visits with their primary care provider but with concerning/urgent mental health complaint. These presentations would include: psychotic symptoms raising concerns to functioning, acute mood and affective symptoms, trauma, assisting in crisis intervention assessing risks for suicidality, violence, grave disability that may lead to involuntary holds, domestic violence support and reporting, child abuse reporting, elder abuse reporting
  • Collaborates with case managers and teams to evaluate and appropriateness referrals
  • Actively participates as part of care team which includes primary care provider, nursing staff, mental health therapists and case managers
  • Advocates for the best interest of the patient
  • Communicate effectively with the patient throughout the physician patient relationship, provide appropriate patient education, and demonstrate respect for the culturally determined needs of patients
  • Shows consistent and determined intent to be competent, meeting or exceeding the community standard of care
  • Demonstrate competent knowledge in delivering health care to patients through peer review as established through the medical staff bylaws, recommendations of each licensing Board, and clinic Quality improvement Program. Participates in the peer Contribution, considering carefully the opinions of colleagues
  • Cooperates with the rest of the medical staff in assuring after hours and Saturday and evening hour’s coverage for the clinic patients
  • Supervise PA’s and NP’s according to the standardized procedures agreed upon which defines their scope of practice while complying with all federal and state regulations and codes
  • Provides continuing medical education to all providers at least twice yearly in topics of internal medicine
  • Supports and contributes to in a positive manner clinic efforts to maintain and improve patient satisfaction in all aspects of health delivery
  • Works at maximum potential to meet productivity requirements in order to improve patient access and fiscal viability while maintaining quality medical care
  • Meets all time commitments by arriving on time to the clinic and working entire shift or more as needed
  • Responsible for maintaining credentials by keeping all required licenses current, including but not limited to California Medical License, DEA licenses, CME hours, CPR Certifications and any other required licenses. It is the responsibility of the physician to give Human Resources current credentials before old credentials expire
  • Willingly performs other duties within the scope of practice as assigned

Education/Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited medical school
  • Board Certified MD/DO with current California License and DEA
  • Three or more years’ experience psychiatric care in a clinic setting preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • State of California Physician and Surgeons license
  • Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry
  • Must maintain CME as required for certification renewals
  • Must be CPR Certified
  • Candidate must be able to successfully meet PHC’s credentialing and privileging requirements

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to communicate with customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Bilingual in Spanish required.
