Summary: The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in preparing, dispensing, and managing medications. This role involves inventory management, providing excellent customer service, and supporting clinical operations to ensure efficient pharmacy workflow and optimal patient care.
Areas of Responsibility
Medication Preparation and Dispensing:
- Accurately process and fill prescription orders under the supervision of pharmacists.
- Verify prescription information, ensuring correctness of dosage, quantity, and directions for use.
- Assist pharmacists in performing inventory checks and medication stocking.
- Prepare medication labels and packaging clearly and accurately.
- Handle prescription pick-up transactions, ensuring patient privacy and compliance with pharmacy regulations.
Inventory Management:
- Conduct routine inventory audits, ensuring medication availability and accuracy. Support medication return processes.
- Order medications and supplies, maintaining optimal inventory levels and minimizing waste.
- Organize inventory storage areas, ensuring proper labeling, storage conditions, and compliance with safety standards.
- Track medication expiration dates and manage proper disposal of expired products.
- Update and maintain accurate inventory records in pharmacy management systems.
Immunization Support:
- Administer immunizations to patients under pharmacist supervision.
- Maintain proper immunization documentation and record-keeping.
- Ensure all immunization activities comply with established pharmacy procedures and state guidelines.
- Maintain immunization certification through continuing education.
- If not already certified, obtain Pharmacy Technician Immunization Certification within 180 days of hire.
Customer Service:
- Provide professional, courteous, and timely service to patients and healthcare providers.
- Assist patients with inquiries related to medications and pharmacy services.
- Facilitate effective communication between pharmacy staff, patients, and healthcare providers.
- Educate patients about pharmacy services, medication adherence programs, and pharmacy policies.
- Maintain patient privacy and ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Regulatory and Compliance:
- Adhere strictly to state and federal pharmacy regulations and 340B program guidelines.
- Support pharmacy manager in maintaining accurate records for controlled substances and assist pharmacists in auditing and compliance tasks.
- Participate actively in pharmacy audits and compliance activities.
- Follow established pharmacy procedures for medication handling and storage.
- Keep informed of pharmacy practice standards, policies, and safety practices.
Operational Support:
- Support the pharmacy manager and staff pharmacist in maintaining efficient pharmacy workflow, prioritizing tasks effectively.
- Provide administrative and clerical support, including answering phones, handling inquiries, and managing incoming prescription orders.
- Assist pharmacists with managing and expediting prior authorization processes.
- Participate in team meetings and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Support pharmacists in clinical pharmacy services, including medication therapy management (MTM).
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experienced in managing Prior Authorization process is preferred.
- Understanding of medication names, inventory systems, and pharmacy operations preferred.
- Prior experience in outpatient, retail, or community pharmacy preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Active Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with the State of California required.
- Certificate to administer immunizations or willingness to obtain Pharmacy Technician Immunization
- Certification through appropriate training (e.g., APhA) within 180 days of hiring required.
- Current Basic Life Support certification required.
- Candidate must be able to successfully meet PHC’s credentialing and privileging requirements
Language Skills: Ability to communicate in English and Spanish with children and adults in person, on the telephone and in writing is preferred. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions and requests from patients, coworkers, and others as necessary. Ability to effectively communicate direction, instruction, and guidance to pharmacists, pharmacy technician, pharmacy clerks and other healthcare providers.
