Job Title: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Trainer

SUMMARY
The EMT Trainer is responsible for providing emergency medical technician support within an Adult 23-Hour Crisis Stabilization Center serving individuals experiencing behavioral health and psychiatric crises. This position supports the delivery of safe, timely, and effective medical observation and intervention within the EMT scope of practice and in accordance with organizational policies, state regulations, and applicable clinical protocols.
In addition to direct service responsibilities, the EMT Trainer provides leadership in the training, orientation, and ongoing development of EMT staff. This role is responsible for coordinating and supporting staff onboarding, shadowing, skills development, and oversight of EMT-related medical documentation to promote consistency, accuracy, and compliance with program standards. The EMT Trainer serves as a resource to staff and leadership in maintaining high-quality service delivery and operational excellence within the crisis stabilization setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide emergency medical technician services consistent with scope of practice, program procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Conduct and document vital signs, health observations, and routine medical monitoring for individuals receiving services.
- Recognize and communicate changes in an individual's medical or behavioral condition to nursing, clinical, or licensed medical staff in a timely manner.
- Assist QMHPs, QMHAs, peers, and other team members with care coordination, evaluations, admissions, transfers, and discharges as appropriate.
- Support crisis response efforts by participating in de-escalation, safety monitoring, and emergency interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Observe for signs of intoxication, withdrawal, self-harm risk, medical instability, or escalating behavioral distress and report concerns promptly.
- Maintain examination areas, medical supplies, and equipment in a clean, organized, and operational state.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic health record and other required systems.
- Adhere to all confidentiality, privacy, safety, and infection control standards, including HIPAA compliance.
- Contribute to a therapeutic, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered environment.
- Serve as the primary EMT training resource within the program.
- Develop, coordinate, and facilitate EMT trainings related to program procedures, workflows, safety practices, documentation standards, and medical observation responsibilities.
- Provide structured shadowing opportunities for newly hired or developing EMT staff to support learning, skill development, and role clarity.
- Assist in identifying patterns, deficiencies, or opportunities for improvement in EMT charting practices.
- Collaborate with leadership to support chart review processes, audit preparation, and documentation of quality improvement initiatives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- N/A
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current Oregon EMT certification – Basic EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic
- Current AHA BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology, assessment, and treatment
- Experience in behavioral health or crisis settings is preferred but not required
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Oregon EMT License (Basic, Advanced, or Paramedic level)
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification
- Must pass a background check and drug screening
QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) to five (5) years of relevant EMT experience preferred, though not required.
- Experience in behavioral health, crisis stabilization, emergency services, detoxification, emergency department, urgent care, or similar settings preferred.
- Prior experience in staff training, mentorship, precepting, onboarding, or supervisory support preferred.
- Familiarity with electronic health records and documentation review processes preferred.
- Experience with trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and crisis intervention preferred.
