The right Veterinary Technician candidate has:

Position Overview:                                      

The purpose of this Veterinary Technician position is to direct, plan, coordinate and perform and variety of animal-health and client-education duties while also assisting in organizing and directing the technical team. The Lead Veterinary Technician ensures quality pet care and promotes greater efficiency. The Lead Veterinary Technician works in tandem with their counterpart lead technician, Oncology Supervisor, and Oncology Director.

The Lead Veterinary Technician will spend 80% of his or her time performing general technician duties, while also observing and evaluating other technicians and assistants in order to guide and aid them.  The Lead Veterinary Technician educates other technicians, keeps them on task and sets an example for others.  The Lead Veterinary Technician should be proficient in both inpatient and outpatient technician duties, have a working knowledge of surgical and laboratory techniques and, in general, be able to coordinate with the veterinarians so that appropriate protocols are followed in both patient care and client service by other technicians and team members employed by the hospital.

Requirements:

  • At least 3 years recent experience in veterinary practice environment with increasing responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead a team.
  • Ability to perform routine veterinary medical procedures (e.g. collect samples, draw blood and administer injections) and properly restrain patients.
  • Knowledge of spelling and meaning of commonly used veterinary medical terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates the ability to show empathy toward clients and treat animals with respect and compassion while maintaining a commitment to outstanding client service.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills.
  • Able to stay on task and work energetically for the entire shift, sometimes exceeding 10 hours per day. Shift does not end until all duties are completed.
  • Veterinary Technician licensure is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds without assistance.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Leadership and Management:

  • Directs and assists veterinary technicians and keeps them on task in their performance of technical and client-educations duties.
  • Responsible for day-to-day activities and ensures smooth production of the emergency department.
  • Finds coverage for those employees calling in sick.
  • Oversee completion of checklists and tasks.
  • Discusses disciplinary actions needed with the Oncology Supervisor and assists with follow-through.
  • Writes and implements some SOPs.
  • Provides input on employee performance, and assists the Oncology Supervisor in the evaluation of technicians and assistants.
  • Works in tandem with the Oncology Supervisor for hiring staff.
  • Serves as liaison between staff and management.
  • Maintains technical knowledge of products, including nutritional products and educates clients and staff on these when needed.
  • Explains the nature of and basis for hospital personnel policies and procedures to clients and staff when necessary.
  • Directs on-the-job training of technical staff.
  • Resolves informal employee complaints and helps mediate interpersonal problems amongst the technical staff. Practices and encourages direct communication with the staff.
  • Serves as a representative of the hospital, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, patients, and other staff members.
  • Demonstrates initiative in everyday duties by seeking other work during down times, assisting other employees and filling in for other employees as needed.
  • Ability to communicate the vision to the staff.

Personal Conduct:

  • Adheres to all hospital policies, standards and procedures as stated in the hospital manual and/or by standard operating procedures.
  • Adheres to the posted work schedule. Arrives for work promptly and begins work at the start time. Follows hospital policies for reporting lateness or absences.
  • Clocks in and out with time clock at the beginning and end of each day and during breaks.
  • Organizes work area and exercises time-management skills to maximize personal efficiency.
  • Prioritizes tasks and handles multiple tasks in a calm, organized manner.
  • Must be team oriented, trustworthy and excel at communications.
  • Must be accountable for own actions as well as those of the emergency team.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
