LVT/RVT Rochester, New York

Description

Position at Companion Animal Hospital

Veterinary Technician
Rochester, NY

More than a word, care is present in everything you do. At Companion Animal Hospital, a Thrive Pet Healthcare partner, we take action to empower your best care for pets, their families, and yourself.

We are a community of 400 clinics forming an extraordinary network of unparalleled resources and people. Through outstanding learning and career options, comprehensive benefits, and abundant support, you’ll be nurtured and appreciated for who you are and what you bring to the table. We come together in both the joys and heartaches of our profession to lift each other up through laughter and empathy.

And, we have plenty of fun along the way!

Who we are:

At Companion Animal Hospital you’ll feel the warmth and openness of a small clinic, while having the opportunity and support of a united network. Our ideal candidate is passionate about animal care, highly motivated, and pays attention to detail. Our Veterinary Technicians are the heartbeat of our team and work side by side with our Veterinarians (DVMs) during procedures.  A full-time position would require working between 30-40 hours a week, which includes a combination of day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. One weekend shift required.

This particular role is a unique position for a licensed veterinary technician with a strong interest in veterinary behavior. In addition to working with the entire hospital team, you will work alongside Dr. Marisa Quinlan, our Behavior Resident, to provide care and support for our behavior specialty patients. This will include assisting with behavior appointments and follow up care, speaking with current and potential clients about safety and behavior management, and assisting with behavior modification training. Our hope is to expand this role over time so that the behavior technician would become responsible for some of our behavior modification recheck appointments under the direction of Dr. Quinlan to help our clients carry out their behavior treatment plan. As you become more comfortable in this role, you will have the opportunity to work independently but with support and guidance along the way. We are also hoping to start offering group socialization and training classes and have a large fenced in area and playroom that allow a uniquely suited environment for this in a hospital setting.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assist with behavior consultation appointments - this may include assisting with documentation in the medical records, assisting with physical exams, and drawing blood.

  • Assisting with behavior modification and training with behavior clients under the direction of our Behavior Resident. Eventually, this will likely include seeing behavior modification recheck appointments independently to help carry out the behavior treatment plan as designed by Dr. Quinlan.

  • Lead group socialization and training classes that would be designed by Dr. Quinlan.

  • Support veterinarians to ensure quality veterinary care, advocate for pets, and educate clients.

  • With each hospital function, assist veterinarians and the medical team to maximize productivity and maintain positive patient flow.

  • Assist with surgeries and procedures in accordance with your state's Veterinary Practice Act outlined for credentialed veterinary technicians.

  • Monitoring and assessing patient’s status

  • Collecting blood and other samples for testing

  • Placing catheters

  • Communicate with clients about individualized pet health concerns and offer guidance on Thrive Membership options, medications, and additional treatments.

  • Assist in maintaining relevant, comprehensive medical records with the support of practice systems.

  • Obtain relevant health history and information from clients and maintain medical charts.

  • Use safe restraining techniques, follow standard protocols, and sustain clean, sterile, organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.

  • Be willing to guide, mentor, and support fellow team members.

Experience & Skills Requirements:

  • Veterinary technician licensure required

  • 1-2 years of clinical experience

  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program preferred; or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, squatting, reach, standing, and walking throughout the day.

Preferred but not required experience and certifications:

  • Experience in dog/animal training. For the behavior technician role, you will receive on the job training before expected to work with clients independently, but prior experience in training and behavior will help to facilitate this process.

  • Fear free certification or similar training in low stress handling techniques.

  • An interest in pursuing certification as a behavior specialty technician - VTS (Behavior).
