Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital is hiring a Kennel Assistant to join our amazing team!


To monitor, clean and maintain all areas of the hospital/Pet Resort, kennels and surrounding outside area. to walk and feed hospitalized/boarded pets. assist treatment and reception as needed.


  • To arrive at work and be prepared to start as scheduled
  • To report to work well groomed and properly dressed
  • To provide compassionate care for pets
  • To follow directions with or without supervision
  • Follow OSHA standards on safety
  • To make sure all cages and runs are clean each morning and throughout the day
  • To make sure both isolation areas are clean each morning and throughout the day
  • Cages are to be cleaned as pets are discharged and prepare for next patient/boarder.
  • To feed and water all pets in kennel with consideration as to what is appropriate for each pet
  • To walk, feed and water all patients in treatment with consideration as to what is appropriate for each pet
  • Dogs are to be walked double leased at least twice a day and for about 5 minutes, unless indicated otherwise
  • To monitor patients/boarders and mark cage cards with all important information e.g.: Pet's appetite, water intake, bowel movements, urination, and vomiting
  • To routinely walk trough and check pets and kennels for water and feces, urine or any problems they may be having
  • Always maintain a quiet gentle voice around pets
  • To assist treatment and reception as needed e.g. holding patients, retrieving supplies, carry out food, and clean areas that become soiled
  • Bathe pets if instructed
  • Answer the intercom or walkie-talkie as needed
  • Promptly get food and deliver as needed
  • Remove deceased pets to the freezers as needed
  • To clean and prepare surgical instruments-learn to build surgical packs and proper use of autoclave
  • Stock supplies in treatment, pharmacy, exam rooms, and restrooms
  • Open, unpack, and receive orders on packing slip, take completed slip to office
  • Put away all orders as they are delivered, never leave overnight
  • To clean, maintain and put away all laundry
  • To do regular maintenance on equipment e.g. dryer, autoclave, dental compressor/etc.
  • To clean and maintain all areas of the facility-treatment, exam rooms, lobby, break room, parking areas, grass areas, Pack room, kennels, etc.
  • Change mop water as needed to keep clean
  • Clean windows weekly
  • Clean all areas of hospital as they become soiled by pets
  • clean clipper blades
  • Police outside area 2 to 3 times daily, keep clean, pick up fecal mater and rinse urine off of structure
  • Mop reception, exam rooms and treatment mid-day and end of day
  • To monitor and clean restrooms throughout the day
  • Keep storage areas neat and organized
  • Clean air vents and change filters as scheduled
  • Shut down and store equipment at the end of the day, make sure any items outside are brought in and put away
  • make sure pets have clean bedding throughout the day
  • Make sure pets have water throughout the day
  • Make sure S-hooks are on cages at the end of the day
  • Empty trash as needed throughout the day
  • To perform end of the day janitorial duties i.e. vacuum, sweep, wipe down counters and remove all trash to the dumpster
  • Must perform other jobs as deemed necessary by employers
  • Make sure sheds and freezer area are locked at closing


  • Must be able to follow instructions
  • Must be able to properly approach and handle pets
  • How to run and operate the Autoclave
  • How to clean and prepare surgical pack (must contain assigned instructions)
  • Must be able to operate a washer and dryer
  • Must be able to read invoices for supplies received
  • Know how to disconnect and reconnect pet on fluids for walks
  • How to properly handle a pet while double leashed
  • Proper procedures to prevent cross contamination
  • How to work with simple machinery
  • Must know how to read, write and understand English


  • Frequent lifting of heavy objects/pets up to 30 pounds
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Walk dogs of up to 130 pounds
  • Restraint of pets up to 50-70 pounds
  • Frequent bending
  • Mopping and sweeping
  • Able to work around foul odors and bodily fluids
  • Able to work an environment exposed to blood, tissue and feces
  • Oral and written communication
  • Visually inspect pets, kennels and area
  • Able to work around pet dander and hair


  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and their owners
  • Is able to work around animals, even when they are stressed, ill or in pain
  • Can stay calm during medical crisis
