Metropolitan Animal Emergency and Specialty Center is looking for a Veterinary Technician to join us as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.
As a Veterinary Technician you’ll play an important role in pets’ lives by providing end-to-end care for our precious patients. Your life-changing work will range from the hands-on care of facilitating outpatient treatments and performing laboratory tests, to support services including admitting and discharging patients.
Role Responsibilities:
- Support veterinarians to ensure quality veterinary care, advocate for pets, and educate clients.
- With each hospital function, assist veterinarians and the medical team to maximize productivity and maintain positive patient flow.
- Assist with surgeries and procedures in accordance with your state's Veterinary Practice Act outlined for credentialed veterinary technicians.
- Communicate with clients about individualized pet health concerns and offer guidance on Thrive Membership options, medications, and additional treatments.
- Assist in maintaining relevant, comprehensive medical records with the support of practice systems.
- Obtain relevant health history and information from clients and maintain medical charts.
- Use safe restraining techniques, follow standard protocols, and sustain clean, sterile, organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
- Be willing to guide, mentor, and support fellow team members.
Experience & Skills Requirements:
· A strongly motivated, team player that is not afraid to take initiative.
· A person with strong communication skills with staff as well as clients.
· 2-3 years of experience as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant
· Emergency experience preferred, but not required.
Our new hires are given training plans that are tailored to their skill level. We focus strongly on learning, growth, and encouragement to master skills in this profession. Below is a list of tasks that you would be expected to know or learn, based on your skill level.
· Proficiency in the diagnostic lab: Running bloodwork on idexx and Heska machines, urinalysis, fecal float, cytology, blood smear, platelet count, etc.
· Surgery and anesthesia – prepping surgical patients for major and minor procedures, intubation, induction, and maintenance/monitoring of anesthesia
· Monitoring patient vitals during procedures and recovery
· IV catheter placement and phlebotomy
· Radiology – positioning, proper technique, restraint
· Administering medications and becoming familiar with commonly used drugs
· Be familiar with CPR
· Maintaining patient charts and client communication
· Triaging patients and recognizing a patient that is unstable
· Perform transfusions of blood or blood products properly
· Assist in answering phones and checking patients in.
· Ensures appropriate standards of patient care and client service are maintained
