The Opportunity:

Working as a leader within the Government Affairs team, this role will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of Sunoco’s government affairs strategy in Canada, overseeing the implementation, management, and coordination of all government and industry association engagement. They will represent Sunoco’s government affairs function with other key stakeholders in furtherance of business growth, operations support, project development, as well as helping to design and implement the broader strategies necessary to advance priorities. They will support government affairs as further directed by the Vice President, Government Affairs.

Responsibilities:

Government Affairs:

  • Represent Sunoco with the executive and legislative branches of all levels of government, regulatory agencies, trade associations, issue coalitions, community groups and other key stakeholders across all jurisdictions.
  • Lead the implementation of government and external affairs strategy that identifies and prioritizes proactive legislative and regulatory initiatives that support Sunoco’s broader corporate strategy.
  • Conduct regulatory analysis and develop recommendations for high level engagements including government consultations and submissions.
  • Manage government incentive and funding applications across the business.
  • Develop and maintain strong positive relationships with government officials across Canada relevant to Sunoco’s work.
  • Build new growth opportunities through relationships, funding, or other advocacy venues to support Sunoco’s business.
  • Support Sunoco’s leadership team as well as different team verticals with best advice and practices on government engagement.

Policy:

  • Drives policy engagement/analysis to ensure alignment with government affairs strategy.
  • Identifies policy engagement opportunities of material impact to Sunoco and designs strategies on policy engagement.
  • Manages the teams strategic research and disseminates reports on trends and issues of importance to Sunoco.
  • Oversees the development of materials that support policy and advocacy efforts including policy/issues briefs, key messages, funding proposals and other relevant materials.

Stakeholder Relations:

  • Leads management of Sunoco’s involvement in industry associations and third-party stakeholders.
  • Identify new opportunities and stakeholders Sunoco should continue to engage with on issues of common interest and take a proactive approach to identifying new opportunities to showcase thought leadership in the company.
  • Bolster Sunoco’s public image with external stakeholders.
  • Enable issues management tracking and reporting.
  • Provide advice and support to capital projects.
  • Provide advice and guidance to refinery leadership on the development and implementation of stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Provide advice and support related to community and stakeholder relations and engagement plans.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Law or Public Policy preferred

Requirements:

  • Government Affairs, Legislative, Regulatory, and/or Public Relations experience required.
  • Ability to interpret legislative and statutory language.
  • Strong understanding of government policies, processes and public policy development..
  • Experience and success in influencing government policy and political issues.
  • Strong discretion and judgement in dealing with confidential and sensitive corporate issues.
  • Excellent understanding and appreciation for government policies and political issues relevant to Sunoco.
  • Project Management skills to manage multiple projects from planning to execution and implementation with tight timelines or large scopes.
  • Able to multitask effectively, with strong time-management skills, and the ability to accelerate in a very fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with a proven ability to work effectively across complex and diverse groups and teams.
  • Exceptional communication and listening skills with a proven track record of advising executives regarding government affairs.
  • Ability to manage and lead a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a wide variety of internal and external contacts, with strong customer service skills dealing with a variety of situations.
  • Extensive travel within Canada.
