The Opportunity:

The Legal Assistant is responsible for the administrative and coordination functions for the Legal team. In this role you will prepare legal documents, draft and review commercial leases, complete legal processes, collect/organize/enter data into the applicable databases and systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Administrative tasks related to Legal, Corporate, Commercial Leasing and Franchising including:
    • Coordination and administration (preapproval, approval, store creation, announcements, etc.)
    • With the assistance of the team, negotiate, draft, review and amend commercial leases and lease documents, sublease agreements, lease surrenders, lease assignments and renewals.
    • Corporate filings such as corporate registrations, renewals, annual filings and amendments.
    • Data entry and maintenance of various systems.
  • Maintains various trackers and databases including the Lease, Corporate, Franchise Agreement, Non-Traditional (Express) portions of the Store Information database. Ensuring accurate and up to date records for the department.
  • Prepare and track new and renewal Franchise Agreements and ancillary agreements.
  • Prepare, send and track Disclosure Documents, Material Change Statements, as required, for new and renewal franchisees.
  • Complete trademark searches and coordinate registrations/renewals.
  • Communicate with and provide information to Franchise Partners on lease and/or franchise agreement situations and business terms.
  • Assist with store transfers (from beginning to end), including legal documents (Franchise Agreements, Disclosure Documents, Releases, etc.), corporate searches and PPSA registrations.
  • Enhance departmental processes where possible to facilitate workflow and keep all parties informed.

Requirements:

  • Degree/diploma in Law or related field.
  • 5+ years previous experience in a legal role with specific experience in commercial leasing and/or franchising is preferred.
  • Exposure to Real Estate and/or Corporate and/or Franchising and/or Leasing law are required.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Extremely organized and diligent with follow-up and detail.
  • Strong technical skills using MS Office and advanced excel skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and multitask.
  • Flexible, team player that is service oriented and shows a willingness to help internal team members, as well as Franchise Partners.
