Starting Salary: $140,000-$180,000/annum

The Opportunity:

The Burnaby Refinery is seeking an experienced Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer / Specialist to provide temporary coverage during a parental leave absence. The successful candidate will support the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of refinery rotating equipment, including pumps, compressors, steam turbines, blowers, fans, mixers, and associated auxiliary systems.

This role works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Technical Services, Projects, and contractors to identify reliability risks, investigate equipment failures, improve asset strategies, and drive sustainable reliability improvements across the refinery. Key responsibilities include failure elimination, bad actor management, condition monitoring, lifecycle planning, day-to-day operations support, and turnaround support.

Responsibilities:

Equipment Reliability & Failure Elimination

  • Investigate rotating equipment failures and reliability concerns.
  • Conduct root cause failure analyses and develop corrective action plans.
  • Identify and eliminate recurring equipment issues and bad actors.
  • Monitor equipment health and reliability performance trends.
  • Provide technical recommendations to improve equipment availability and maintainability.
  • Support risk mitigation efforts for critical rotating assets.

Asset Care Strategy Development

  • Own and steward rotating equipment asset care strategies.
  • Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance requirements.
  • Optimize maintenance intervals based on operating history and equipment performance.
  • Develop and improve equipment standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Support machinery lifecycle planning and equipment obsolescence management.

Condition-Based Maintenance Programs

  • Support and improve vibration monitoring programs.
  • Support lubrication and oil analysis initiatives.
  • Promote mechanical seal reliability improvements.
  • Analyze condition monitoring data and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with machinery technicians, Operations personnel, and vendors to improve equipment performance.

Turnaround & Project Support

  • Develop rotating equipment scopes for turnarounds and planned outages.
  • Provide field support during major overhauls and repairs.
  • Participate in design, constructability, maintainability, and reliability reviews for capital projects.
  • Ensure design-for-reliability principles are incorporated into equipment upgrades and new installations.

Safety & Operational Excellence

  • Maintain a strong field presence and promote safe work practices.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, safety meetings, and incident investigations.
  • Support Process Safety Management initiatives and refinery reliability programs.

Qualifications:

Engineer Stream

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in rotating equipment reliability, maintenance, or engineering within a refinery, petrochemical, oil and gas, or heavy industrial environment.

Specialist Stream

  • Technical diploma, journeyperson certification, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience with rotating equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability improvement.

Preferred Experience

  • Centrifugal pumps and compressors.
  • Reciprocating compressors.
  • Steam turbines.
  • Mechanical seals and seal systems.
  • Lubrication and oil analysis programs.
  • Vibration analysis and machinery diagnostics.
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA).
  • Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM).
  • API and other applicable rotating equipment standards.
