About the Role

 

The Operation Services Department (OSD) is the primary provider of maintenance and operational support for all lines of business within the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Operations Services Department is seeking an Automotive Engineer for the Central Automotive Division. The Automotive Engineer will provide technical support under the supervision of the Supervisor, Automotive Engineering.

 

The position will be primarily located at the Port Authority Technical Center in Jersey City New Jersey. Field work and travel to vendor plants may be required.

 

The work hours will primarily be 8 am to 4 pm.

 

This role requires the ability to pass appropriate background checks to qualify for and maintain access to Secure Areas.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and preparation of procurement documents for the Authority’s fleet of specialized automotive equipment and other units.
  • Work with the Supervisor Automotive Engineering, CAD Management, Shop Supervisors and other Automotive Engineers in all aspects of acquiring new fleet vehicles. This includes collaborating with end users, preparing competitive bid (RFI and RFP) documents, analyzing bids, recommending purchases, participating in pre-production meetings with vendors, factory and acceptance inspections, approving vendor payments, and other responsibilities associated with vehicles or equipment.
  • Provide engineering support in analyzing and inspecting failures and/or defects in engineering design and manufacturing of vehicles in the field.
  • Responsible for data collection and analysis. This includes the preparation of detailed reports.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts to improve production time.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in automotive, mechanical, industrial, or similar engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of experience with duties related to fleet engineering, maintenance, or automotive design.
  • Valid Class D (NJ Basic or equal) Driver’s License with a demonstrated safe driving history.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with DOT, NY & NJ Motor Vehicle regulations including size and weight limitations and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
  • Must be able to pass the required background checks and qualify for access to Secure Areas.

  • Able to work well under pressure and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Excellent written communications skills.
  • Experience in Project Management and/or Contract Administration.
  • Knowledge of the Authority’s procurement process.
  • Membership in Professional Societies such as NFPA, ASME, SAE or other organizations involved in standards setting

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipates that the actual salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on aspects such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal factors. The expected compensation range for this role is:​

 ​

Minimum: $73,658   Midpoint: $95,742   Maximum: $117,832

 ​

In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits employees to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business, and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required on business needs.
