About the Role
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is a bi-state public agency operating some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the New York/New Jersey region, including The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads.
The Office of the Chief Safety Management Office (CSMO) plays a vital role in furthering the mission of the Port Authority by ensuring the workplace meets all occupational health and safety legal expectations and actively supports the highest quality occupational health and safety programs to ensure the safe movement of the Port Authority’s customers, partners, employees, and stakeholders every day. Safety Management Office, within the CSMO, maintains and develops safety, fire protection, occupational health, and public health programs and policies for the PANYNJ.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Occupational Health, the selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Evaluating occupational and environmental health conditions at Port Authority facilities
- Identifying and characterizing potential chemical, biological, and physical hazards; establishing controls using instruments, reference information, and experience; preparing reports.
- Reviewing and interpreting occupational and public health regulations and participating in developing or revising agency protocols.
- Developing and implementing agency safety and health programs.
- Developing and implementing industrial hygiene sampling plans.
- Conducting exposure assessments for airborne contaminants, noise, and other occupational stressors using direct-reading instruments and sampling equipment.
- Conducting indoor air quality and mold investigations.
- Maintaining and calibrating industrial hygiene instrumentation.
- Collaborating with engineers, safety professionals, and medical staff to design and maintain safe working environments and healthy work practices.
- Staying current with emerging occupational health risks, scientific literature, and changes in federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, CDC, NYS DOH).
- This position requires travel to all Port Authority facilities and work hours may include some early mornings, evenings, and/or weekend shifts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in occupational and environmental health science, public health, occupational safety, and health or a related scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, physics, environmental engineering, etc.
- One-year practical experience in performing environmental and public health inspection or a related field preferred.
- Applicants must be committed to the use of Safety Management System principles to further improve the Agency's safety performance.
- Diversified experience in reviewing, interpreting, and implementing occupational health codes, including NYSDOH, NJDOH, CDC, NJDEP, NYSDEC, NYCDEP, NYCDOH, EPA, OSHA, and industry guidelines and standards.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver's license.

- Ability to conduct a variety of highly technical tasks and projects from start to finish.
- Knowledge of instruments used to measure physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proficient in the use of computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, eBuilder
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and prioritize assignments.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist or equivalent preferred but not required.
