About the Internship

 

The Aviation Department within Port Authority maintains Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) through the Engineering and Line Departments.  EWR serves as an international gateway for both passengers and cargo. EWR, which is spread out over 2000 acres, has 3 terminals, 100-plus gates, and 30-plus airlines operating more than 1,200 flight operations daily.  The Structural Integrity unit performs a variety of functions, which includes: coordinating routine inspections; cyclical facility condition surveys; property damage cost recovery efforts by Legal; and responds to on-call incidents.  The successful candidate will assist with daily site visits, coordinate meetings, prepare meeting notes, organize work folders, etc.  This will provide a better understanding of the day-to-day inner workings of an airport and the daily challenges met by airport personnel.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with managing Facility Condition Survey program and operating major works program specifically, budgeting, schedules, etc.
  • Assist with documentation including managing charge codes, budgets/forecasts, and project’s scope of work.
  • Conduct field investigations of structural issues as they arise and recommend corrective actions for short term and long-term solutions.
  • Coordinate meetings and prepare meeting notes.
  • Organize work folders and update documents pertaining to record-keeping.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college/university through Summer 2025 and into the Fall 2025 semester
  • Major in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Engineering Management

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe, and Microsoft 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Excel, etc.)
  • Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region.
  • Interest in public service and/or transportation.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational capability, problem-solving, critical thinking mindset.

 

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 29, 2025
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 22, 2025
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • The format is expected to be in-person

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $17.63 to $27.21 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
