Your Career 

Palo Alto Networks is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Supply Base Manager to join our exciting, fast growing company. The Supply Base Manager will work closely with Engineering and other internal cross-functional teams on implementing strategies, contracts, and pricing with an overall focus on fostering long-term supplier partnerships. The Supply Base Manager will lead and support the development, implementation, and management of commodity strategies to provide Operations and Engineering with best in class quality, pricing, and delivery. This position reports to the Manager of Supply Base Management and is based at our headquarters in Santa Clara, CA.

Your Impact

  • Develop and manage strategic supplier relationships to provide PANW with optimized performance on technology, quality, responsiveness, delivery and cost requirements (TQRDC)
  • Establish and execute annual cost savings goals ensuring PANW receives optimal pricing across all commodities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Hardware and Software Engineering, New Product Introduction, Product Management, Component Engineering, Manufacturing and Test Engineering) for technology roadmaps and new product readiness
  • Develop and execute commodity sourcing strategies leveraging input from Product Management and Engineering
  • Support technical and business requirements for NPI and Sustaining products
  • Ensure continuity of supply throughout the product lifecycle
  • Foster internal customer relationships to drive strategic and operational results

Supplier Management

  • Develop/promote strategic and executive relationships across the supply base
  • Communicate PANW corporate vision, strategy and product roadmaps to suppliers
  • Manage supplier performance (TQRDC) process; lead business and scorecard reviews for strategic/preferred suppliers
  • Develop performance improvement plans or supplier exit strategies as needed
  • Negotiate and maintain supplier agreements including Master Purchase Agreements (MPA), Non-disclosure Agreements (NDA), Service Level Agreements (SLA), liability and flexibility agreements
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain on Supplier Managed Inventory (SMI) programs between key suppliers and manufacturing partners
  • Communicate component forecast to suppliers
  • Manage new supplier onboarding process
  • Identify supplier consolidation opportunities to leverage favorable business terms
  • Provide support and drive resolution for supplier and material escalations
  • Negotiate last time buy (LTB) and end-of-life (EOL) terms and agreements
  • Support Internal Customers as required


  • Conduct cost negotiations to achieve annual cost reduction goals; support the semi-annual price review process
  • Establish a commodity cost negotiation strategy and define key cost drivers
  • Understand market conditions and dynamics of the competitive landscape
  • Identify and drive value engineering opportunities
  • Maintain component pricing and attributes in a Product BOM system

New Product Development

  • Early engagement with Engineering, Product Management, and Suppliers to align technology roadmaps and new product readiness
  • Ensure supplier readiness in alignment with NPI development milestones
  • Execute and negotiate RFQ/RFP activities; present new business awards
  • Support NPI procurement activities; negotiate for optimized prototype pricing; seek out cost avoidance opportunities

Commodity Team

  • Lead and participate in cross-functional commodity teams, identify emerging requirements, develop commodity requirements, socialize team achievements
  • Develop, socialize and execute commodity strategy
  • Lead vendor selection process; Collaborate with Engineering and other cross-functional team members to define supplier sourcing criteria and also maintain a Preferred Supplier List (PSL)
  • Conduct supplier site surveys, audits, and qualifications
  • Continual awareness of industry influences and commodity market conditions

Risk Management

  • Partner with Component Engineering to identify and qualify multi-source solutions
  • Ensure suppliers support requirements for RoHS, conflict minerals, supply chain security, social initiatives, and resiliency programs as defined by Risk and Compliance Manager
  • Collaborate with Risk and Compliance Manager on financial and risk assessments
  • Enable flexibility programs with suppliers
  • Support LTB and EOL assessment and execution

 Performance Metrics

  • Annual Commodity Cost Reduction
  • Maintain assurance of supply without revenue impact
  • NPI execution to build schedules and product milestones
  • Supplier Agreements
  • Completion of annual commodity strategy refresh and review
  • Completion of Supplier Business Reviews (SBRs) 

Your Experience

  • BS/BA in Supply Chain, Business, or Engineering an MBA/MS preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of direct experience in *ASIC/Switch/Processors*
  • Excellent cost negotiator with the ability to leverage “trade-offs”
  • Understanding of Principles of Sourcing Strategy and Supply Chain Management
  • Flexibility to work and achieve goals in a fast-paced, high growth environment with an ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • A highly collaborative working style in a team environment
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and facilitation skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate within all levels of the organization
