Summary:
The position will oversee the strategic planning and execution of all procurement functions, including direct and indirect sourcing for critical areas such as manufacturing, clinical, commercial/marketing, travel, and administrative areas, as well as procure-to-pay and employee expense processes. This role is accountable for driving value, ensuring cost efficiencies, supplier management and innovation, and managing risk across the organization. Reporting directly to senior leadership, the position requires strong cross-functional collaboration with internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure alignment on sourcing strategies, contract negotiations, supplier performance, and ongoing continuous improvement initiatives. 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
 
  • Lead the procurement function with a focus on strategic sourcing, cost optimization, supplier innovation, and risk management.
  • Develop and execute procurement strategies that align with company goals, focusing on value creation, innovation, and efficiency across categories.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, providing insights and recommendations on procurement strategies and opportunities to support the company’s business objectives.
  • Define category objectives, strategies, and annual savings targets to drive cost reduction and optimize value across the organization.
  • Oversee end-to-end sourcing processes, including the preparation and management of requests for proposals (RFPs), negotiation of contract terms, and supplier selection.
  • Oversee end-to-end vendor payment processes and employee expense reimbursement, including the timely receipt, approval, and payment in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Drive excellence in post-contract evaluations, key performance indicator (KPI) development, service level agreements (SLAs), and supplier relationship management (SRM).
  • Implement and manage a robust supplier performance evaluation system, ensuring alignment with corporate goals and continuous improvement across the supply chain.
  • Develop a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) culture that prioritizes long-term value creation and process improvements across all sourcing activities
  • Collaborate with senior leadership across commercial, finance, legal, operations, and clinical teams to ensure procurement strategies are fully aligned with business objectives.
  • Engage with key internal stakeholders to drive the procurement agenda, enhance transparency, and build consensus across functions.
  • Oversee the development and management of the procurement infrastructure, including policies, processes, and systems that support strategic sourcing initiatives and procurement-to-pay activities.
  • Continuously assess market trends, supplier landscapes, and industry best practices to drive procurement innovation and stay ahead of industry developments.
  • Drive operational efficiencies through the adoption of Lean/6-sigma methodologies and digital transformation initiatives within the procurement function.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, GAAP/SOX, and other financial and regulatory requirements.
  • Present procurement strategies, performance metrics, and cost-saving initiatives to senior leadership.
  • Track key performance indicators and supplier scorecards to monitor effectiveness.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Lead a growing team of procurement professionals, providing mentorship, performance evaluations, and career development support. Expand the team as needed to support the organization’s strategic objectives.
Interaction:
Regular interaction with senior leadership and cross-functional teams across legal, finance, compliance, operations, and other departments. Engage with external suppliers and consultants to build strong partnerships and ensure the successful execution of procurement strategies.
 
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Supply Chain Management, or related field required. Graduate Degree in Business or a related field preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in procurement leadership roles, with a strong focus on strategic sourcing, supplier management, and procurement operations.
  • Industry experience in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and/or biotechnology is preferred.
  • Proven experience managing direct and indirect goods and services procurement.
  • Expertise in SAP Ariba, procurement-to-pay (P2P) systems, and contracts management tools is preferred.
  • CPM, NAPM, or other relevant procurement certifications are a plus.

  • Lean/6-Sigma certification or equivalent experience in process improvement is highly desirable.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% to other company sites and vendor locations.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, move between spaces, reach with hands and arms, and stoop. Close vision and the need to focus on computer screen, use of hands, fingers, and wrist to type on keyboard and manipulate mouse.

Typical office setting, staff in cubicles, noise level is moderate with consistent printer, telephone ringing and conversation.

For San Francisco Only:
The base pay range for this role is $236,000 per year to $310,000 per year.  
 
The range is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. The range considers a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: geographic markets, business or organizational needs, skill sets, experience, training, licensure, and certifications.
