The purpose of this position is to manage all aspects of the day to day operation of the department’s Metrology, Building Management and the Utility Control Systems (BMS/UCS).  


  • Manage all Metrology, BMS and UCS equipment and controls through the CMMS work order system
  • Oversee the planning, distribution and execution of work orders utilizing the computerized maintenance management system through Blue Mountain RAM software
  • Assume responsibility as the technical owner of various automation, metrology, clinical and commercial manufacturing systems and applies available resources to manage them
  • Responsible to manage a budget, develop financial reports on a monthly basis and support yearly budget planning
  • Support overall site and corporate initiatives -both capital and expense as subject matter expert and with resource loading
  • Support the change control process and all quality systems such as quality event reporting
  • Support all capital projects as needed for Standards, Review and Approvals. Engineer and manage new process control/automation/metrology projects from the concept to commissioning and validation
  • Provide day to day guidance and support for direct reports
  • Deliver initiatives that provide for the overall goals of the company and Engineering Department with regards to Automated Equipment design, Metrology standardization and compliance
  • Engineer and manage medium to large process control system/equipment improvement, optimization, and expansion and upgrade projects to meet site objectives
  • Provide moderate to advance technical assistance to site operating groups through investigations, control system assessments, and design support
  • Assist in preparation, approval and execution of the Validation Qualification protocols related to automated control systems and Metrology. Provides technical and non-technical feedback to validation personnel for the successful qualification of systems
  • Help to troubleshoot and diagnose complex problems with regards to automated control system design and instrumentation, working closely with process automation and maintenance personnel
  • Update and develop User Requirement Specifications, Functional Specifications, Design Specifications, Operation and Maintenance Manuals for the new and existing control systems and metrology
  • Work closely with IT groups as a cross functional team member to meet automation project objectives
  • Apply GMP principles within the workplace. Incorporate cGMP and regulatory compliance into all assigned project scopes, design, construction and daily activities


Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position will have direct reports.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical/Controls or Mechanical Engineering Degree (BSCE, BSIT, BSEE or BSME) from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 10 years hands on experience with process controls equipment including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, metrology and instrumentation including design and debugging skills
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in pharmaceutical environment including regulatory requirements associated with 21 CFR Part 11 and supporting validation of control system equipment and compliant calibration programs
  • Managerial experience overseeing day to day operations of an Automation, Metrology or IT department with direct reports
  • Extensive cross-functional team experience, including technical and non-technical work
  • Recognized as a technical expert by peers and other personnel within the business unit
  • Successful track record of managing wide-ranging activities within the business unit. Demonstrates independent project management skills to successfully deliver projects to completion.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage cross functional teams, projects and direct reports
  • Possesses a high level of technical expertise on a specific process control system and their connections to facility equipment, production equipment, instrumentation, and manufacturing systems, loop controllers, HVAC controls, and related electrical/electronic equipment and devices
  • This position requires a high degree of analytical skills to provide automated solutions to improve processes and integrate new equipment to meet company and project objectives
  • Familiar with CMMS system such as BM RAM as a work order and calibration tracking system
  • Ability to organize and present technical and project mgt. overviews without assistance
  • Technically independent and maintains state-of-the-art technical abilities. Display initiative and commitment.
  • Able to make independent contributions to the development of new methodologies or new technologies for calibrated process control systems.
