Staff Accountant

Job Overview:
The Staff Accountant will play a pivotal role in our accounting department, ensuring accurate and timely financial operations within the transportation industry. This position requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, exceptional organization skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The Staff Accountant will work closely with the Senior Staff Accountant and other members of the accounting team.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations, in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements and reports, including the setup, input, review, and analysis of financial data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of journal entries and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
- Maintain the fixed asset system, including asset additions, disposals, depreciation, and related reconciliations.
- Record monthly equipment sales and calculate applicable commissions.
- Prepare and post weekly and bi-weekly payroll journal entries to general ledger.
- Assist with the budgeting and forecasting processes, including data gathering and variance analysis.
- Provide financial analysis and support special projects and ad hoc requests as needed
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and support.
- Ensure compliance with accounting policies and regulations.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements within the accounting department.
- Assist in the implementation of new accounting software and tools as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience in accounting or finance.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices (GAAP).
- Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Experience in Karmak or other ERP systems is a plus
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
Physical Requirements:
- Office Environment
- Must be able to lift/carry 5 lbs frequently.
- Must be able to lift/carry 25 lbs occasionally.
- Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs infrequently.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
