Job Overview
The Mobile Trailer Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and emergency roadside service on commercial trailers at customer locations. This position serves as a direct representative of the company in the field and is expected to provide safe, efficient, and high-quality service while maintaining exceptional customer relationships. 
 
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Preventative Maintenance and Inspections: Perform routine preventative maintenance and DOT inspections on commercial trailers. Ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Trailer Systems Diagnosis and Repair: Diagnose and repair key trailer systems, including brakes, suspension, wheel-end assemblies, landing gear, electrical and lighting systems, air systems, doors, liftgates, and structural components. Address issues efficiently to maintain safe and reliable operation.
  • Structural Repair and Fabrication: Repair or replace damaged trailer components such as floors, roofs, side panels, and rear frames. Perform welding, fabrication, and other structural repairs as needed to restore equipment integrity.
  • Mobile Service and Equipment Operation: Travel to customer locations to complete scheduled and emergency repairs. Safely operate company service vehicles and equipment while ensuring vehicles remain clean, organized, and properly maintained.
  • Inventory and Resource Management: Maintain appropriate inventory levels of tools, parts, and supplies on assigned service vehicles. Ensure readiness to respond to service calls without delay.
  • Documentation and Technology Use: Accurately record labor hours, repairs, parts usage, and inspection results. Complete work orders, DOT reports, and other documentation in a timely manner while utilizing company software and mobile systems to manage assignments.
  • Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all company safety policies and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, DOT, and EPA standards. Use required PPE, maintain a safe work environment, and promptly report any incidents or safety concerns.
  • Customer Service and Communication: Communicate clearly with customers and management regarding repair status, timelines, and recommendations. Deliver professional service, build strong customer relationships, and represent the company positively at all times.
  • Team Collaboration and Development: Work collaboratively with dispatch, service management, parts teams, and other technicians. Support training and mentoring of less experienced team members and participate in ongoing training and development opportunities.
 
Skills and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Technical or vocational training in trailer repair or related field preferred.
  • Previous trailer repair experience preferred.
  • Experience with brake systems, suspension systems, electrical diagnostics, and welding preferred.
  • Mobile service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of commercial trailer systems and repair procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair procedures.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to meet company driving requirements and maintain insurability.
  • DOT Annual Inspection Certification preferred.
  • Brake Certification preferred.
  • Welding certifications preferred but not required.
 
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and carry more than 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.
  • Work in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and underneath trailers.
 
Work Environment
This position primarily works in a mobile field service environment at customer locations, roadside locations, fleet yards, warehouses, distribution centers, and other outdoor work environments. Work may be performed during varying weather conditions and may require occasional overtime, evening, weekend, or emergency service work based on business needs.
