ABOUT US:
Yachad is dedicated to enriching the lives of Jewish individuals with disabilities and their families, by enhancing their communal participation and their connection to Judaism through social and educational programs and support services.
POSITION SUMMARY:
IVDU Special Education Assistant Teachers instruct students with a broad range of disabilities, which include, but are not limited to: cognitive disability, social deficit (autism), speech and language impairments, and/or physically handicapping disabilities. Instruction encompasses social and life skills lessons in accordance with Jewish law and the education curriculum outlined in the Individualized Education Plan determined by the New York State Board of Education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Providing direct instructional support to individual and/or groups of students and monitor ability to follow directions and behavior, or attend designated classes/activities with the student(s), as outlined in the Individualized Educational Plan.
- Implement modifications and adaptations to the environment or materials as directed by the staff, and assist staff in maintaining charts and other records related to student(s) progress.
- Collect data regarding student(s) reaching goals/objectives.
- Reinforced academic and social behaviors taught and provide the student with opportunities to practice.
- Model appropriate pro-social skills, participation, adult behaviors and problem-solving skills.
- Assist staff in the management of student behavior by applying proactive strategies when dealing with student behaviors. Implement district approved techniques for verbal de-escalation -Crisis Prevention Intervention.
- Act as a cooperative team member in working with staff, community and families of students.
- It is important that the SEA protect the health and safety of students by handling specified medical needs such as feeding tubes, seizure protocol, and behavioral outbursts in the classroom.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and required by the school administration and staff.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certain grade levels may require New York State licensure.
- Hebrew language skills and knowledge of Judaic customs a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position may require some mild physical demands (examples include but are not limited to helping a special needs child with toileting support, assist with stairs, modal and direct hand for written assignment purposes, etc.)
