Position Available:            Communications Officer – Medical (CO-Medical)

 

The Ornge Operations Control Centre (OCC) works closely with provincial hospitals, remote nursing stations, Central Ambulance Communications Centres (CACC), and other stakeholders to enable the transport of patients across Ontario.

 

Position Status:        Temporary, Full-Time Swing

Rate:                  $27.39/hour; Post Probation: $34.65/hour

Location:              5310 Explorer Drive, Mississauga

Reporting To:          Operations Control Manager

 

Position Summary:

The Communications Officer – Medical (CO-Medical) position is responsible for monitoring inter-facility transfers, including ensuring proper communication links between various healthcare providers involved in the transport requirements of all patients transported by Ornge.

The CO-Medical will receive and review telephone and web medical transport requests from various stakeholders to ensure all transport requests are properly assessed for appropriate level of care requirements, triaged and documented to ensure an efficient, patient-centered delivery of our medical transport services.

 

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with Flight Planners, Paramedics, Physicians and various allied healthcare professionals;
  • Respond quickly and efficiently to emergency calls;
  • Utilize exceptional interpersonal skills, courtesy, tact, and compassion when interacting with other healthcare professionals;
  • Work effectively in a demanding, challenging, emergency services environment; and
  • Analyze issues, develop solutions and execute plans in an individual or team oriented role.

 

Qualifications:

  • Medical background with related experience such as paramedic, RN/RPN, emergency or clinical experience (preferred) or Emergency Telecommunications Certificate.
  • Successful completion of the Ornge Communications Officer’s certification training program;
  • Strong understanding of the provincial air ambulance system and emergency services communications;
  • Experience working within the Air and/or Land Ambulance Transfer System (preferred);
  • Proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer;
  • Dispatch experience is a definite asset; and
  • Ability to train and mentor is an asset.

 

Hours of Work:

Successful candidates must be able to work shift work in a 24/7 operation. This includes an ability to work on a rotational shift basis. Rotational shifts include days, afternoons and nights on weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays as required. All successful candidates will be required to complete and meet the terms of a Declaration of Willingness and Ability to Work.
