The Medical Simulation Specialist provides hands-on operational and technical support to the Education simulation programs at Ornge Headquarters. These programs include, but are not limited to the Critical Care Paramedic, Flight Nursing programs, as well as applicable continuing professional development events. This role is essential to the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of high-fidelity simulation-based education and assessment.
Working closely with Faculty Educators, Simulation Leads, and Program Leadership, the Simulation Specialist supports simulation preparation, room setup, technology operation, live scenario support, reset, and post-event readiness. The role is operational and learner-facing, ensuring simulation environments are consistently prepared, functional, and aligned with educational objectives.
This position is ideal for individuals with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and interest in healthcare simulation who thrive in fast-paced, team-based environments.
Key Accountabilities:
Simulation Operations & Readiness:
- Prepare simulation rooms, equipment, and supplies in accordance with session plans and setup documents.
- Ensure simulation environments are turn-key ready prior to learner arrival.
- Stage and maintain consumable bins, response bags, and scenario-specific supplies.
- Perform room walkthroughs to ensure safety, cleanliness, and organization.
Simulation Technology Support:
- Operate and support simulation technologies including:
- High-fidelity manikins
- iSimulate systems
- SIMCapture and audiovisual recording systems
- Tablets and associated applications
- Conduct pre-session technology checks and troubleshoot issues discreetly during live simulations.
- Ensure all simulation technology is properly powered, charged, and configured.
Live Simulation Support
- Provide on-site technical and operational support during active simulation sessions.
- Assist educators with scenario flow, room changeovers, and time-sensitive transitions.
- Monitor equipment and technology for malfunctions and intervene as required.
End-of-Day Reset & Readiness
- Oversee and support end-of-day reset processes in collaboration with educators and learners.
- Clean, disinfect, restock, and re-tag equipment and supplies.
- Ensure all rooms are returned to baseline configuration and ready for subsequent use.
- Secure simulation spaces and confirm readiness prior to departure.
Documentation & Escalation
- Complete daily room readiness and closing checklists.
- Log equipment, supply, or technology issues.
- Escalate unresolved or significant issues to the Program Lead or Manager in a timely manner.
Professional Accountability
- Maintain a visible, professional presence in the simulation centre.
- Adhere to simulation centre safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards.
- Contribute to a psychologically safe, respectful learning environment.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, learners, and other simulation staff.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in a healthcare, technical, or simulation-related field.
- 3-4 years of minimum experience.
- Strong technical aptitude and comfort working with audiovisual equipment, tablets, and software systems.
- Ability to follow detailed setup instructions and checklists with accuracy.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team.
- Physical ability to move, set up, and reposition simulation equipment and supplies.
Assets (Preferred):
- Experience working in a healthcare simulation environment.
- Experience with high-fidelity manikins, iSimulate, SIMCapture, or similar platforms.
- Background in paramedicine, nursing, respiratory therapy, or other healthcare disciplines.
- Familiarity with CCP or advanced care paramedicine education.
- Experience supporting OSCEs, simulation-based assessments, or skills labs.
