Hours of Work

Flexibility to work various shifts is required. Scheduling model supports a 24/7, 365 operation which include days, afternoons, nights, weekdays, weekends, and statutory holidays as required.

The Ornge Communications Centre (OCC) works closely with provincial hospitals, remote nursing stations, Central Ambulance Communications Centres (CACC), and other stakeholders to enable the transport of patients across Ontario.

 

Position Summary:

The Communications Officer – Flight Planning/Following will plan and coordinate air and associated land patient transportation, team transfers for neonatal and organ retrievals.  They determine the level of transportation requirements in accordance with patient care by selecting the appropriate resource based on geographical location and patient care/transportation needs.   A key aspect of this role is effective communication with Pilots, Paramedics, Doctors, and various allied health care professionals to ensure the safety of each patient during the transport phase of the call.

 

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with Flight Planners, Paramedics, Physicians, and various allied healthcare professionals.
  • Respond quickly and efficiently to emergency calls.
  • Utilize exceptional interpersonal skills, courtesy, tact, and compassion when interacting with other health care professionals.
  • Work effectively in a versatile emergency services environment; and
  • Analyze issues, develop solutions, and execute plans.

Qualifications:

  • Recognized education in aviation management/operations preferred or an emergency telecommunication certificate.
  • Must have a restricted operator certificate – aeronautical and valid standard first aid certificate. 
  • 2 years of aviation/dispatch experience (Systems Operations Control Centre, Land EMS, Air Traffic Control).
  • Technical knowledge of air or land ambulance transfer system is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the aviation industry including airport operations and aircraft capabilities.
  • Knowledge of the provincial ambulance system and emergency services communications.
  • Technically proficient in MS Office Suite and computer aided dispatch system software.
