The Faculty Educator – Interprofessional Development and Professional Practice (Faculty Educator) at Ornge is tasked with the design, development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of educational activities designed to develop and maintain the knowledge, skill attainment and professional development for front-line clinicians. They ensure consistent, high-quality education for both initial and ongoing professional development, while also handling mandated aspects of Maintenance of Certification, including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. Practice Specialists collaborate with the Clinical Affairs team and organizational stakeholders to deliver the department’s mandates. Primary duties are organized into three key areas: Initial Education, Continuing Professional Development, and Program/Corporate-wide Support.     

Reporting primarily to one of the Clinical Affairs Program Leads (with accountability to the Managers of Program Design and Academic Innovation, Clinical Education and Development, and Clinical Performance and Patient Safety) the Faculty Educator is primarily responsible for the design, development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of educational activities for Ornge paramedics.

Additionally, the Faculty Educator will be responsible for the facilitation of Base Hospital and/or Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) mandated aspects of Maintenance of Certification (MOC), and for the completion of relevant quality assurance and quality improvement activities. MOC related activities might include clinician return to clinical practice supports, including remediation when required. QA and QI initiatives, including but not limited to patient chart/clinical case reviews, clinical metrics etc., assess the quality of patient care compared to clinical practice guidelines and medical directives, and strive to provide data driven insights to guide further education and program delivery objectives.       

The Faculty Educator’s role requires collaboration and coordination with the Program Leads, fellow Faculty Educators and with the broader Clinical Affairs team, including the Director, Associate Medical Officers, accountable managers, Service Operators, the MAC and internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of programs. In addition, Faculty Educators will be required to direct and support the work of Paramedic Practice Mentors (PPMs) and Clinical Practice Leads (CPLs), ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality education to meet program mandates.      

The –Faculty Educator will advise their Program Lead or Manager on portfolio requirements. Faculty Educators will be organized and provided targeted portfolio work within one of three key areas:     

  • Initial Education (Aeromedical and Critical Care programs) – reporting to Program Lead, Initial Education Programs.
  • Continuing Professional Development (Continuing Medical Education, Operational training, and Paramedic Remediation and Re-integration – reporting to Program Lead, CPD.
  • Program/Corporate-wide Support (LMS, Onboarding, Recruitment/Selection, Return to Clinical Practice) – reporting to Manager, Program Design and Academic Innovation, accountable to other department Managers.

NOTE: As requested by the Program Leads, Faculty Educators may be requested/required to complete work normally assigned to another portfolio/Faculty Educator.  

  

Responsibilities:

Initial Education:     

  • Responsibility for the design, development, and delivery of the initial education content (such as but not limited to Critical Care Paramedic Program, Aeromedical Theory Program, Flight RN Program), as assigned, and
  • Responsibility for the design and development of Operational training (such as new equipment, mandated training requirements), and
  • Evaluation and assessment of learner achievement or progression within a program, and
  • Support the Program Leads and accountable Managers in ensuring that the design, development, delivery, and assessment of education meets or exceeds the requirements outlined by Accreditation Canada and incorporates academic best practices where applicable, and
  • Provide direction to Initial Education learners throughout program as needed/required, and
  • Provide direction and support to PPMs/CPLs, who may be delivering education content on behalf of Practice Specialist.      

Program/Corporate-wide Support:     

  • Support the instructional design team (LMS) with development, and delivery of asynchronous learning activities, and
  • Support corporate/operational training programs, such as but not limited to, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), MOH mandated training activities, and
  • Oversee the on-boarding of new Paramedic employees, and
  • Oversee administrative needs for paramedics returning to clinical practice, and
  • Provide consultation for equipment acquisition related to area of expertise, and
  • Provide subject matter expertise consultation to physicians as part of the fellowship program.      

Continuing Professional Development (CPD):     

  • Responsibility for the design, development, and delivery of continuing professional development education activities/content as a component of the annual maintenance of certification requirements, mandated by the Ornge Base Hospital and Medical Advisory Committee, and
  • Evaluation and assessment of learner achievement or progression within a program, and
  • Support the Program Leads and accountable Managers in ensuring that the design, development, delivery, and assessment of education meets or exceeds the requirements outlined by Accreditation Canada and incorporates academic best practices where applicable, and
  • Support the learning needs of CPD learners as needed/required, and
  • Provide direction and support to CPLs and/or PPMs, who will be delivering CPD education content, and
  • Coordinate, design, and monitor continuing educational activities as part of the paramedic reintegration and remediation process.      

Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement:     

  • Directed by the Program Lead of Quality Improvement and Standards, the Faculty Educator is responsible for the completion of QA auditing, guided by the Base Hospital (BH) mandated aspects of Maintenance of Certification and the Ornge BH Performance Agreement, and
  • Participation in Quality Improvement initiatives, guided by the needs of the department or broader organization, and
  • Identify and participate in call review meetings with front-line clinicians in conjunction with the Medical Director
  • Evaluation of patient care and clinician performance, including but not limited to investigations, call reviews, or other activities identified by the Quality and Patient Safety Team.

Base Hospital, Certification and Evidence Based Practice:     

  • Support the facilitation of initial certification/credentialing or entry to practice processes, including assessment and evaluation, for Primary Care, Advanced Care (Land and Flight), Critical Care Paramedics, Flight RNs, and Medical Fellows, and
  • Develop content to facilitate such initial certification/credentialing process, and
  • In discussion with accountable Managers, participate with Provincial Base Hospital (OBHG) committees and sub-committees as required, and
  • Support the Manager, Clinical Performance & Patient Safety and the MAC in developing evidence based clinical practice guidelines, medical directives and practice resources as required.   

Overall Accountability:     

  • Participation in activities of mentorship and education, such as leading “train-the-trainer program sessions” for PPMs/CPLs delivering education, as needed, and
  • Support Simulation Specialists in planning equipment/space needs for delivery of simulations and base labs, recording educational resources and supporting simulation-based assessment, and
  • Complete individual Professional Development plan throughout the academic year (to be discussed and approved annually with respective Manager), and
  • Overall, provide innovative instructional concepts and techniques to facilitate all clinician learning, pulling from expert backgrounds and training (CCP, RN, RRT), while providing positive and safe learning spaces for all colleagues and learners.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field as a Critical Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Flight Paramedic, Registered Nurse (Critical Care/Emergency), or Respiratory Therapy.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Graduate Education/Master’s degree in related field.
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field (i.e. Adult Education).
  • Simulation & Debriefing Education/Experience.
  • CPR, ACLS, PALS, NRP.
  • Minimum of five years of independent practice in a related health care field (Paramedic, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy).
  • 2 years’ educational experience in teaching health professionals.
  • Prior experience designing, coordinating, and delivering programs.
  • Experience in the use of low and medium simulation equipment.
  • 5 or more years as CCP, RN, RRT.
  • Maintenance of Professional Certification/Clinical Activity (including Paramedics, through Base Hospital certification).
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of adult education in various environments using a variety of media including simulation.
  • Knowledge of the ambulance system in the Province of Ontario; specifically, the relationships between the MOH and Base Hospitals.
  • Microsoft office suite.
  • Various audio/visual equipment set up.
  • Medical Quality Assurance / CQI experience would be an asset.
  • Experience in teaching health professionals or within an Ontario Base Hospital as an educator/CQI would be an asset.
  • Specific education and experience in adult education, or health care simulation education.
