JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Toolroom Foreman & Training Officer.

 

 

DEPARTMENT:

REPORTING TO:

    Toolroom Department.

    Tooling and Preventative Maintenance Manager. (TRM)

 

 

ACCOMMODATION:

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

    Toolroom.

    Toolmakers.

    Apprentices.

 

 

LIAISON WITH:

TRAINING:

    Heading Shop.

    Secops Department.

    Apprentices.

    Training companies/Colleges.

    To recommend training needs to TRM.

    To assist in developing suitable training programmes and deadlines.

    To ensure proper training records are kept up to date by trainees and submitted to TRM.

    To attend suitable training courses and seminars as recommended by TRM or Directors.

    To receive appropriate training.

    To keep up-to-date records of training.

    As Training Officer:-

    Development of suitable training programmes for staff in liaison with Department Managers.

    Provide formal ‘On’ and ‘Off’ the job training for staff.

    Ensure proper training records & reports are maintained.

 

JOB FUNCTION:

    To oversee the day to day running of the Toolroom and its Toolmakers.

    To supervise and assist all Toolmaking staff and Apprentices.

    Organisation of staff training and maintenance of records.

 

DUTIES:

    To manufacture, assemble, disassemble, repair, and modify tool sets for Cold Heading and Rollforming.

    Manufacture and fitting of plant and machinery subcontracted to the Toolroom.

    Project work as assigned by the Tooling and Preventative Maintenance Manager.

    Self certification of work in accordance with the Quality and Continual Improvement commitment.

    Submission of work for QA checking as required.

    To assist management and staff in the identification, and introduction of  all reasonable measures to improve productivity, quality and working methods and conditions as part of the continual improvement and TQM programmes.

    Maintain high production rates of items with consistently high levels of accuracy and quality in line with Company requirements.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY.

    Organising/coordinating daily work programme, tool and material availability for Toolmakers in liaison with TRM to achieve planned production in the most efficient, cost effective manner.

    Day to day disciplinary control of Toolmakers concerning observation of factory rules and attendance on section during working hours as agreed with TRM.

    Referring major disciplinary matters to The TRM.

    Maintaining Health & Safety regulations and ensuring compliance with safe working practices at all times.  Reporting unsafe situations to the TRM.

    Ensuring Toolmakers maintain high standards of housekeeping (cleanliness, tidiness, tool shadow boards) and constantly demonstrating own commitment.

    Ensuring Toolmakers comply with their Quality and Continual Improvement commitments and constantly demonstrating own commitment.

    Ensuring production targets are achieved through the most efficient use of capacity/speed, skills and working practices.

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS RESPONSIBILITIES.

    To provide technical skills, support and advice and 'hands on' assistance on Toolroom machines to Toolmakers in the event of setting, tooling or material capability problems.

    To apply own 'hands on' operation of machinery as necessary.

    To observe and investigate 'down time' situations arising from lack of skills, tooling, material and related services and report to TRM as part of The Company REDUCTION OF DOWN TIME Project.

    To use 'hands on' and technical skills to develop, test and commission tool sets for new components in liaison with TRM and/or PCFM for both headers and Rollformers.

    To assist the PCFM and TRM in the continuous tool life improvement programme.

 

TRAINING OFFICER RESPONSIBILITES

    Development of suitable training programmes for staff in liaison with Department Managers.

    Provide formal ‘on’ and ‘off’ the job training for staff.

    Maintenance and development of training records & reports.

    Organisation of training, support and guidance of Apprentices.

 

HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

    Maintain safe working practices and observe Health & Safety regulations in accordance with Company Policy & current legislation at all times.

    To ensure that The Dept maintains a high standard of Housekeeping (cleanliness of workspace and related areas) throughout.

    Maintain environmental controls according to current legislation, Company procedures and good practice.

    Day-to-day maintenance of departmental Health & Safety compliance according to Company rules, policies & current legislation.

 

VARIATION OF DUTIES:

    This specification has been drawn up to cover all the main areas of responsibility, at the present time. It should not be considered as exclusive, as it may be necessary to adjust, add or remove functions at any time, which form a natural/logical part of the overall responsibility.

 

SPECIAL NOTES:

    Flexibility of lunch breaks to support Heading machine productivity.

 

MEETINGS ATTENDANCE/REPORTS:

To attend the following meetings as and when required:-

    Quality Meetings (in absence of TRM).

    Toolroom Continual Improvement Meetings

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

    Minimum City and Guilds (Engineering discipline)

    HNC (Engineering discipline) desirable.

    'O' Levels or GCSE Grade 1 in: Maths, English, Metal or Woodwork.

    NEBBS Supervisory course essential.

    NVQ - Level 2 or 3 in appropriate discipline.

 

SKILLS PREFERRED:

    Fault detection.

    Accurate machining on lathes, surface and cylindrical grinders.

    Accurate marking out.

    Understanding and reading Engineering drawings to BS 308.

    Communication (Written & Verbal).

    Reading Engineering drawings.

    Good comprehension of the characteristics and performance of tools and their design in cold forging.

 

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

    Minimum 10 years Toolmaking experience in a Toolroom environment.

    A reasonable understanding of the construction and operation of all above type of cold headers.

    Sound understanding of modern heading tool design and construction for special parts.

    Used to working and demonstrating self improvement in JIT/TQM /ZERO DEFECT disciplines.
