About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer at Opentrons, you will play a crucial role in building and maintaining software applications and features used by our customers, particularly in the realm of scientific protocol authorship. This role demands a robust background in software engineering, especially in cloud environments. You will be expected to work highly independently, sometimes assuming a team lead role, and bring your expertise to complex technical duties.

 

This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager of the Protocol Authorship team.

 

What You Will Do

Design, develop, and maintain cloud-based applications that enable our customers to easily author and share scientific protocols.

 Lead projects from idea to execution

Partner with the Product Management team on conceiving, architecting and executing on features that delight our customers.

 Write clean, scalable, and efficient code.

Identify and correct bottlenecks and fix bugs.

 Mentor and teach other engineers

What We Are Looking For

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant experience
  • 7+ years of experience in building high quality user-facing software for customers.
  • Experience working in n-tier architectures, at all tiers.
  • Strong proficiency in Python or Node JS.
  •  Extensive experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure and services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with database systems (SQL)
  • Experience with infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Strong understanding of software development best practices and design patterns.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with DevOps practices and tools, e.g., CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, Github Actions
  • Experience with robotics
  • Knowledge of embedded systems and desktop applications.
  • Life Science Experience 

Compensation: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $165,000 and $180,000 per year;  base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.  We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
