Position Overview

We are seeking a Manager of Purchase Accounting with strong technical accounting expertise and the ability to understand a business operationally and translate that understanding into sound accounting conclusions. This role will have significant responsibility for purchase accounting, revenue recognition, financial reporting, and other complex technical accounting matters, including consolidations.

The ideal candidate is an independent problem solver who can research complex accounting issues, partner effectively with business stakeholders, document conclusions in clear technical accounting memos, and then transition those conclusions to the operational accounting team for execution.

Responsibilities

Purchase accounting (ASC 805)

  • Lead acquisition accounting from LOI through measurement-period close
  • Scope, manage and challenge third-party valuation reports
  • Build and maintain opening balance sheet walks; identify intangibles, assumed liabilities and pre-acquisition contingencies
  • Coordinate tax, legal-entity and consolidation implications
  • Lead purchase accounting activities related to acquisitions, including evaluating fair value and ensuring the appropriate accounting is incorporated into the accounting system.
  • Own and support revenue recognition analysis, including issues arising from acquisitions, new businesses, and new product launches.
  • Prepare clear, well-supported technical accounting memos documenting the issue, relevant guidance, analysis, and final accounting conclusion.
  • Partner with operational accounting teams to translate technical conclusions into appropriate journal-entry treatment and ongoing accounting processes.
  • Address additional technical accounting topics, including consolidation considerations associated with new businesses and ownership structures.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings and communicate technical accounting conclusions clearly to business partners

Technical accounting policy

The strongest candidate will bring strong financial reporting and technical accounting capabilities, particularly in revenue recognition and purchase accounting. The hiring team is looking for someone who can think critically and independently.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate that they understand the business model and operations of the companies they have supported and can apply accounting guidance to real-world business situations. Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to think on their feet in stakeholder discussions are also important.

  • Author and maintain group accounting policy memos
  • Revenue recognition (ASC 606 / 340-40) for MGA and claims businesses: policy-level contracts, performance obligations, principal vs. agent, profit commissions, cancellations, contract costs
  • Debt modifications and extinguishments (ASC 470-50/60), leases (ASC 842), related parties (ASC 850), EBITDA and covenant reporting policies

Qualifications

  • CPA; 8+ years technical accounting, including Big Four / national-firm advisory plus in-house experience
  • Deep, practical ASC 805 and ASC 606
  • Insurance distribution / MGA / fee-business experience is a plus
  • Strong writer: memos a reviewer can follow without a meeting
  • Comfortable in a PE-backed, high-change environment with thin infrastructure

Why this role

Build the function rather than inherit it, with direct exposure to deal activity, sponsor reporting and the Executive Team.
