Position: Mid-level Flight Dynamics Engineer                                          Job ID # 312

Job Description:

This position provides experienced Flight Dynamics expertise to NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Flight Dynamics Support (FDS) team, Earth Sciences Mission Operations (ESMO) Project. The FDS team supports maneuver operations by planning, executing, and calibrating satellite maneuvers including Conjunction Risk Mitigation Maneuvers and routine Station-Keeping maneuvers for Aqua, Aura, and Terra spacecraft. The FDS team provides significant analysis support to ESMO and the associated constellations.  Additionally, the team supports requirements definition, design, configuration, and acceptance testing of multiple software tools, including the ESMO Constellation Coordination System (CCS) and the EOS Flight Dynamics Ground System.

Specific areas of support will include:

  • Developing and maintaining software for flight dynamics products and functions such as Maneuver Planning and Orbit Determination
  • Working directly with several stakeholders to develop mission software requirements
  • Creating test plans and performing functional software testing and integration of software
  • Ensuring adherence to configuration management policies and procedures
  • Determining operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions
  • Improving flight operations by introducing system enhancements and recommending changes to operational policies and procedures
  • Preparing for and presenting to involved stakeholders at engineering milestone reviews for approval
  • Creating, maintaining, and executing training of flight operations personnel
  • Understanding of Inclination and Drag-makeup maneuver planning and analysis, Risk Mitigation Maneuver (RMM) Planning, De-orbit planning, collision avoidance, and contingency analysis
  • Supporting occasional instances of critical operations and off-hour support
  • Working well independently without constant management supervision
  • Some travel may be required. Off-hours support will be required.

Skill Requirements:

  • Experience with flight dynamics tools such as FreeFlyer (preferred), STK, ODTK or GMAT
  • Experience and understanding of SDLC methodologies
  • Ability to work independently and self-lead
  • Experience in Low Earth Orbit Mission Operations and Analysis
  • Experience in flight dynamics/orbit analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective technical writing ability
  • Analytical problem solving skills

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
  • Covariance Propagation Experience

Required Experience:

3+ Years

Required Degree:

MS in Aerospace Engineering or spacecraft-related field

Or:

BS in Aerospace Engineering or spacecraft-related field plus an additional 2+ years of experience (5+ years of required experience total)
