Veterinary Criticalist

Specialty Diplomate East Greenwich, RI

Description

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is looking to add a fifth criticalist to our team. We have a large group of truly talented emergency clinicians, and specialists in surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, avian/exotics and radiology. We only hire internship-trained emergency doctors because we practice specialty level medicine on the emergency service. Most patients admitted through emergency stay on the emergency service, rather than being transferred to other specialties to be managed. The criticalists help to support the emergency clinicians, residents and interns who work both receiving shifts and inpatient shifts.

Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS) is currently a small ER/specialty hospital in Swansea, MA – but we are currently renovating a 36,000sf building which should open in the summer of 2024. The current facility offers full time surgery, internal medicine, and emergency services. The plans for the new building include expanding our specialty services to include radiology, oncology, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and exotic pet medicine. There will be a linear accelerator and a CT scanner, so medical, surgical, and radiation oncology will be a significant focus of the hospital. This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to join a young team of specialists and ER doctors and help to grow the hospital while being a part of the development of a positive work culture.
The environment at OSVS is very supportive. Day shifts start with sit-down rounds, where we discuss all of the patients on the emergency service. ER clinicians who have been with us for 10 years tell us that they still learn every day that they work here. We have intentionally hired people who work well together – and most of our specialists and many of our ER doctors started their careers with us and never left.

The critical care group is respected and appreciated by the entire team. The criticalists’ compensation is not dependent on production - as we expect them to provide support and assistance to all the other doctors and they play an important role in teaching our interns and residents and maintaining quality control for our inpatients. We are currently in the design phase for a brand new ICU to be added to the building, as well as building a new facility for our sister hospital in Swansea, MA. Opportunities to work at both hospitals will be available if the criticalist is interested.

About the hospital:
Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is a unique place. The hospital philosophy has always been that if we practice good medicine, and treat our people and our clients well, we will be profitable. We keep our fees as reasonable as we can, which helps to limit economic euthanasias and allows our staff to feel good about what they do. Despite having grown to a staff of over 50 doctors, the hospital still has a family feel, and our people know that we care about them. Many of our ER doctors and specialists did their internships here, and either stayed or returned. They love the medicine, and the culture.

The hospital is a 26,000 sq. ft. facility located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, with dedicated emergency and specialty areas. OSVS provides referral and emergency services to Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut, and southern Massachusetts, and there is no general practice associated with the hospital. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, laparoscopy, fluoroscopy, multiple flexible and rigid endoscopes, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, a complete in-house lab, and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. The staff includes specialists in internal medicine (6), surgery (4), cardiology, radiology, emergency/critical care (2), neurology (2), oncology, ophthalmology, and avian/exotics, as well as a large group of exceptional emergency clinicians. The support staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about continuing education. There is a well-respected rotating internship, emergency/critical care residency, emergency/surgery internship, and surgery residency. The emergency caseload is high, and the cases challenging, and because of our fee structure, our clients are able to let us do a lot with our patients.

About Rhode Island:
The Ocean State is so named because of our extensive coastline. It is the smallest state in the nation, yet has a vibrant city with a renowned restaurant and cultural scene, rural farmland, coastal communities, and plenty of areas for hiking, kayaking, and enjoying the outdoors. It takes less than an hour to cross the state – so everything is close by. Boston is just over an hour from Providence, the ski areas of NH and VT are only a few hours away, and New York City is less than 3 hours by car or train.
