Veterinary Student Summer Externship

Veterinary Student Externship East Greenwich, RI

Description

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is excited to host veterinary students for summer externships! This valuable clinical experience will let you take what you’ve learned during your first and second year of veterinary school and put it to the test in a referral and emergency animal hospital. Our hands-on summer externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA-accredited veterinary schools. Since every student has different interests, we are excited to offer these programs tailored to meet the interest of our externs.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school

Hospital Information:

OSVS is large and busy 24-hour referral and emergency hospital located in East Greenwich, servicing RI, eastern CT and southern MA. There are highly trained emergency doctors overseeing the care of the inpatients 24/7, as well as an excellent nursing staff. We have board-certified specialists in ECC, IM, Oncology, Neurology, Cardiology, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Radiology, and Avian/Exotics.  The exceptional group of doctors, technicians, and support staff are not only great at their job but are also genuine animal lovers.

What to expect from your externship:

During your externship, you can expect to actively participate in treatments and direct patient care to further your development towards becoming a veterinarian. Throughout your time with us, you will always be supervised by an experienced veterinary technician or veterinarian. You will complete cage side treatments and nursing care with our experienced Emergency and ICU technicians. If there are certain technical skills you are looking to improve on, let us know so we can place emphasis on these areas! Some days you will have the opportunity to participate in morning doctor rounds as well as do some direct shadowing with our emergency and specialty doctors.  We encourage active participation from externs and truly make them part of our team. Performing patient assessment, collecting the patient history, completing treatments, and formulating a plan for diagnostics and treatment are a great way to put your education to the test and help prepare you for the real-world of veterinary medicine.

Compensation is available and based on the extern’s prior technical clinical experience.
