About the Department
The Event Development and Production Department develops and produces NYRR events from concept all the way through execution in alignment with NYRR’s mission. The TCS New York City Marathon, United Airlines NYC Half and the RBC Brooklyn Half are just a few of the 40+ adult events and 30+ Rising New York Road Runners youth events produced by the team each year. The team leads core elements of the operations including physical site management, timing and scoring operations, volunteer management, hospitality and special events, safety and security, management of our warehouse and all race collateral, city and state agency relationship management, and permitting.
 
About the Internship
The New York Road Runners Internship program is a paid, 21-week experience in which interns have the opportunity to learn from the best in the non-profit business. Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.
 
Internship dates will be Monday, June 15, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026.
As part of the Volunteer Operations team, the Intern will report to the Director, Volunteer Operations, and support the team’s recruitment, education, and management of general and medical volunteers needed to produce NYRR events, including the TCS New York City Marathon.
 
Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
  • Support the Volunteer Operations team with daily tasks related to recruitment of general and medical volunteers for weekly events and the TCS New York City Marathon
  • Provide customer service to prospective and registered volunteers through daily management of volunteer inboxes
  • Create pre- and post-event communications using the volunteer administration system and email communication platform
  • Assist the Volunteer Manager at weekly events with race day support including setup, check-in, issue escalation, volunteer support, and breakdown.
  • Support logistics for in-person and virtual medical volunteer orientations for the TCS New York City Marathon
  • Support on-site volunteer operations for Marathon Monday, following the TCS New York City Marathon
  • Lead 2 intersecting critical projects to enhance race-day experiences for the TCS New York City Marathon
Internship Hours: 
  • Interns will work 25 hours per week Monday through Friday.
  • Interns are required to work the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1st, as well two other weekend events (dates to be determined).
  • Other weekend event-based work may be required and will be evaluated as needed based on position.
Internship Requirements: 
  • Currently enrolled in a relevant Undergraduate or Masters program in Event Management, Hospitality, Sports Management, or related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
 Physical Requirements:
  • The ability to be outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts
Salary: $22/hour
