About HDC
The New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is a public benefit corporation and the nation’s largest municipal Housing Finance Agency. HDC seeks to increase the supply of multi-family housing, stimulate economic growth, and revitalize neighborhoods by financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income New Yorkers. HDC’s programs support the construction and preservation of multi-family affordable housing in New York City.
Position Summary:
The Government Affairs Intern will work with colleagues across HDC and HPD, along with other governmental and trade group partners, to help advance the housing policy priorities of HDC and the City of New York as a whole. The Government Affairs Intern will be responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and communicating key legislative and regulatory issues to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
The Government Affairs Intern will work on the Government Affairs team in the President's Office and report to the Vice President for Government Affairs and the Director of External Affairs. The Government Affairs team works to promote policy changes and seeks to increase the amount of federal, state and city resources available to support HDC’s mission of creating and preserving multifamily affordable housing in New York City.
Through one or more projects, you will receive coaching and support on how to:
- Identify, analyze and promote critical changes to affordable housing program and financing resources
- Effectively build relationships and collaborate with experts and leaders across various national and local organizations to advance HDC’s policy priorities
- Fine-tune your writing and communication skills to be effective in time-constrained environments
Responsibilities:
- Assist IGA team in helping advance HDC’s federal and state priorities
- Track, summarize and analyze relevant federal and state legislation and budgets
- Monitor and provide coverage of hearings hosted by key Congressional committees
- Assist in the production of educational and advocacy materials on HDC/HPD’s top policy priorities
- Attend meetings with local and national trade groups and monitor discussions on HPD and HDC’s top legislative and regulatory priorities
- Attend local partner meetings and events on relevant issues and provide summaries of the discussions
Required Qualifications:
- Must be pursuing a graduate-level degree in any field of study
- Superb communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional federal or state legislative or advocacy experience, including internships
- Professional experience working with HUD programs or in real estate finance, including internships, or relevant coursework in federal or state affordable housing policy and programs and/or communications
- Experience tracking, summarizing, and analyzing legislation and budgets
- Experience drafting educational materials on complex subject matters
- Familiarity with using federal legislative and regulatory databases, including Congress.gov and Federalregister.gov
- Familiarity with the federal legislative and appropriations processes
