About HDC
The New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is a public benefit corporation and the nation’s largest municipal Housing Finance Agency. HDC seeks to increase the supply of multi-family housing, stimulate economic growth, and revitalize neighborhoods by financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income New Yorkers. HDC’s programs support the construction and preservation of multi-family affordable housing in New York City.
Position Summary:
The Data Analytics Intern will build data tools that describe the state of multifamily housing in New York City. This internship will provide exposure to the use of data tools in the development of government programs that encourage investment in affordable multifamily housing.
More specifically, the intern’s work will include extracting and transforming data from internal and external sources; building data analysis pipelines; summarizing, visualizing, and presenting results; and documenting presenting their work. Their work may also include the development of statistical models and reporting dashboards.
This internship will be housed in HDC’s Policy and Analytics (P&A) Division, and the intern will report to the group’s Managing Director. As part of the President’s Office, P&A provides advisory and analysis services to help HDC’s senior leaders address critical issues and advance the Corporate mission. The division’s work is interdisciplinary, and our projects often consider intersecting issues of affordable housing, finance and the markets, economic and social policy, social equity, governance, management, and technology.
Recent projects on which the team has worked on include: Monitoring rental arrears and financial trends in multifamily housing; analyzing citywide eviction patterns; implementing a data governance program; identifying applicable local emission compliance requirements for HDC buildings; and integrating external data sources into the team’s database.
Responsibilities:
- Extract data housed at HDC and in external data systems
- Execute data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, statistical modeling, and visualization in R
- Read, understand, and reproduce quantitative methodologies from written articles
- Document the contents and structures of data sets; describe analysis methodologies used
- Communicate findings through written documents and presentations
- Undertake special projects/initiatives as requested
Required Qualifications:
- Enrollment in a graduate program; this internship is open to all program types, but see “preferred qualifications” below for coursework areas most relevant to this opportunity
- Strong quantitative aptitude
- Proficiency with R (Tidyverse), Python (Pandas), or other data analysis software (e.g. Stata)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills; excellent attention to detail
- Ability to apply knowledge and creative thinking
- Ability to work with a high degree of independence
Preferred Qualifications:
- Intermediate to advanced coursework in statistics, data analytics, or data science
- Comfort with reading and understanding scholarly research articles
- Familiarity with querying databases using SQL
- Familiarity with dashboard or business intelligence systems
- Interest in housing policy and real estate
