Position Overview: The Economic Research & Policy Department performs industry and economic research to provide insights into key policy issues, conducts economic analysis of NYC projects, and tracks economic trends for the Mayor, policymakers, and the public as a whole. The team also supports NYCEDC in the evaluation of projects by setting up tools to assess, measure, and report on ideation and results. ERP advances high-impact thought leadership on inclusive and innovation-driven economic development.  

The Assistant Vice President will contribute to economic research and thought leadership on inclusive economic development topics, will project manage our long-term or large-scale research projects, and will work with the department head and other senior team members to coordinate research strategy. Ideally, this position would have experience in both qualitative and quantitative research, as well as experience using data visualization tools and statistical packages. This role would also include answering data requests from other departments at NYCEDC and would be highly collaborative with the other staff in the Economic Research & Policy team. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Research and evaluate potential impacts to NYC of public policies related to inclusive economic development, and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to various audiences (e.g., internal and external stakeholders) by creating and delivering memos, reports, dashboards, and presentations 
  • Enhance department research with data visualization, using best practices to make complex data analysis visually compelling, and using techniques to identify actionable insights  
  • Identify research topics on key issues, create workplans, manage analyses and documentation, and present findings to internal and external stakeholders via presentations and publications 
  • Create and deliver presentations to senior staff that effectively communicate key project findings and recommendations to various audiences (e.g., internal and external stakeholders) 
  • Project manage and serve as an organizing force on long-term or large-scale research projects, including projects where you are not the lead researcher.  
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders including our External Affairs team on publication strategy.  
  • Work with department leadership, agency leadership, and other senior team members to coordinate research strategy to support the evolving needs and priorities 
  • Seek opportunities to enhance other researchers’ work via innovative quantitative, qualitative, and data visualization techniques. Collaborate effectively with other team members. 
  • Manage, coach, and provide strategic direction to junior staff and coordinate work of external stakeholders, cross-departmental and cross-agency teams to execute projects and ensure project objectives are achieved and timelines are met 
  • Knowledge sharing with other team members around best practices for data visualization and quantitative analysis. 
  • Assist in data requests from agency leadership, other departments, partner agencies, and City Hall staff. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree preferred in economics, statistics, public policy, or similar 
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience 
  • Superior attention to detail and quality management; strong quantitative skills; ability and interest to analyze large and varied data sets (experience using American Community Survey or Current Population Survey data a plus) 
  • Ability to think creatively about inclusive economic development and local policy; demonstrated interest in policy issues facing New York City a plus 
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills:  ability to effectively convey technical data and results of complex analyses, adapting approach and style across a variety of audiences; ability to communicate strategically based on needs and in a persuasive manner to produce the desired results 
  • Excellent project management skills: manages project deliverables effectively; ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment among competing needs, opportunities and projects 
  • Resourceful and takes initiative to propose and implement process improvements; comfortable interfacing with senior officials and external stakeholders across sectors, and effectively managing the relationships and earning trust 
  • Excellent organizational skills, and ability to work as part of a collaborative team 
  • Understanding of US macroeconomic indicators a plus 
  • Intermediate programming skills (R strongly preferred) 
  • Experience in data visualization tools (such as Tableau or Power BI) and data visualization packages in R (such as ggplot2) 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint & Excel (Advanced Excel skills preferred) 
  • Experience coaching, developing and mentoring staff a plus 
  • Must obtain/maintain New York City residency within 180 days of hire
