Position Summary:

Responsible for day-to-day operations of institutional housekeeping and custodial services for all Garden facilities spanning 33 buildings and 250 acres of grounds; including office buildings, green houses, library and laboratories of the New York Botanical Garden.

 

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Continually inspects the 250-acre New York Botanical Garden property to maintain clean buildings and litter-free grounds throughout.
  • Manages and supervises the activity of the unionized custodial workforce that provides all housekeeping services.
  • Foster and maintain effective communication and collaboration with the morning shift management team and overlapping shift staff to ensure seamless operational continuity.
  • Provides support as needed for all special events site-wide, which may include setting up tables, chairs, tents and supplies.
  • Supervises the custodial workforce and addresses performance or disciplinary issues as needed.
  • Assists the director in maintaining budgetary control of all expenses related to custodial services.
  • Trains employees in proper performance of custodial tasks, use of chemicals, and proper use of PPE.
  • Explains and enforces safety requirements when utilizing cleaning equipment and/or sanitizing.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive preventative maintenance and deep cleaning schedules for facilities, including detailed plans for hard floor care and carpet.
  • Establishes and reviews work assignments and modify as required.
  • As needed, provides custodial support to outside contractors providing services to NYBG.
  • Coordinates snow removal procedures around Garden buildings and pubic areas.
  • Prepares Work Orders and distributes to service crew, dispatch orders and relay messages and special instructions to mobile crews using radio.
  • Attends training as requested.
  • Performs any combination of the following duties to correct floor deficiencies; stripping and refinishing, cold or hot water carpet extraction, floor buffing and scrubbing.
  • Enforces OSHA requirements and compliance
  • Performs daily supply inventory and equipment inspection
  • Creates and maintains a daily work report for morning review by supervisors
  • Stays current on CDC guidelines for COVID-19 disinfection as well as other viruses

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong supervisory ability, good judgment and interpersonal skills.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in custodial services
  • 1-3 years’ experience in managing a unionized workforce, disciplinary procedures and scheduling; required.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • OSHA 10 certified.
  • Experience in coordination, planning and inventory control.
  • Must be able to attend and/or remotely respond to emergencies when they occur.
  • Must be able to physically participate in the work being managed, including the ability to move 25 lbs. and lift overhead.
  • Possess a clean driving record/license in order to operate NYBG vehicles. Class B license preferred.
  • Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • Must be available for a work schedule of Monday-Friday 3pm-12am

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand; walk; sit; use hands, , use heavy equipment, reach with hands and arms; climb stairs. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low, moderate or loud work conditions.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday 3pm-12am.

 

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the range of $68,000-$75,000.
