Position Summary:

The Budget Director plays a key role in supporting the financial health and mission of NYBG. This position, in close partnership with senior leadership in finance, is responsible for preparing, monitoring, adjusting and reporting on the institution’s annual operating budget. The Budget Director collaborates with departments across the Garden in budget related functions.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the VP for Budget & Planning and CFO, lead the development and monitoring of NYBG’s annual operating budget. Partner with department heads to develop budgets aligned with unit goals and funding sources.
  • Collaborate with grants management team and fundraisers to ensure gifts and grants are properly budgeted.
  • Track and analyze in-year budget progress and provide related reports. Submit timely budget adjustments to ensure accurate reporting for department managers and senior leadership.
  • Work closely with all levels of management to resolve budget issues throughout the year.
  • Contribute to budget-related work associated with timely fiscal close.
  • Supervise reporting staff.
  • Ad-hoc reporting and analysis as needed.
  • Additional related duties and special projects as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related field.
  • Comparable experience requiring a facility with numbers will be considered.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience at a managerial level in budgeting, ideally in non-profit environment.
  • 2-3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Proficiency with Excel and familiarity with accounting and budgeting software.
  • Prior experience with ERP budget software tools is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex
  • financial information clearly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Ability to present and explain budget information at a local and institutional level.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Generally, Monday – Friday; 9-5; additional hours as needed to complete deliverables.

Hybrid work options are available for this role.

 

Salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $110,000-$125,000.
