Assistant Foreman of Gardeners (Horticulture)

Position Summary: 
The Assistant Foreman of Gardeners, working with the AP Farm AVP for Horticulture Operations and other senior Horticulture staff members, will perform all necessary tasks and supervise gardeners, assistant gardeners, botanical garden aides, as well as students, and volunteers in the daily maintenance and long-term care of the landscape, glasshouses, outdoor gardens, exhibitions, and seasonal displays of the New York Botanical Garden.
 
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.
 
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform daily required work in the landscape, glasshouses, outdoor gardens, exhibitions, and seasonal displays associated facilities and hardscape.
  • Organize, supervise, and train gardeners, assistant gardeners, botanical aides, students, and volunteers in necessary horticultural skills and tasks and plant health-related work.
  • Organize and provide all tools and equipment necessary for these tasks.
  • Working with managers and curators, evaluate the performance of plants in the landscape, glasshouses, outdoor gardens, exhibitions, and seasonal displays and make recommendations for additions and replacements.
  • Monitor the health and vigor of plants in the landscape, glasshouses, outdoor gardens, exhibitions, and seasonal displays and work with Director of Plant Health and others to plan and implement treatments.
  • Use, repair, and maintenance of all tools and equipment related to the care of the landscape, glasshouses, outdoor gardens, exhibitions, and seasonal displays and associated hardscape and facilities.
  • Be responsible for the performance of other garden staff in completing assigned tasks and for the safe use of all necessary tools and equipment.
  • Maintain and submit daily work logs when requested.
 
Qualifications:          
  • This is a promotional opportunity available only to NYBG employees in good standing as of May 27, 2024 with the title of Gardener.
  • Two years of full-time experience in gardening work, including experience in each of the following: planting, cultivating, and caring for trees, plants, shrubs and lawns; or
  • 30 credits in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field from an accredited college or community college and one year of full-time gardening work experience as described above; or
  • A certificate from a recognized horticultural or botanical program and one year of full-time gardening work experience as described above.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to any of the above. However, candidates must have at least one year of full-time gardening work experience as described above.
  • The ability to follow instructions and to work as part of a team.
 
  • Must have supervisory skills and be responsible for the performance of reporting staff in completing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and understand written and verbal communication.
  • A Motor Vehicle Operator’s License valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment.
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator–Category 3A License issued by the State of New York Department of Environmental Conservation at time of appointment or the ability to obtain such within six months of hire.
 
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, work outdoors in all weather conditions in all seasons, stand, sit, crouch, kneel, and walk, operate lifts and other machinery, climb ladders, use hand tools and power equipment, and lift and\or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to perform tasks repetitively.

Baseline Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:000m. Some overtime and weekend work are required
 
Salary: $2,000 over current base
