Curator of Amazonian Botany

 

Position Summary:

The Research Assistant is a temporary, part-time position that will work closely with the Curator of Amazonian Botany to assist with an array of tasks related to a taxonomic monograph. 

 

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Maintain data base and update as needed
  • Process new dried plant collections
  • Organize archives of field images and botanical drawings
  • Annotate specimens of Burseraceae and return loans
  • Prepare herbarium labels
  • Prepare images of leaf clearings for publication

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Software: at least 5 years using Excel, Word, PhotoShop; familiarity with KE-EMu software; 1 year using ChatGPT
  • Herbarium:  at least 5 years experience working in herbaria, cataloguing, mounting, digital imaging, filing
  • Geography:  familiar with flora and geography of Neotropics
  • Fluent in Portuguese and English required; Working knowledge of Spanish preferred

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

This position may require work with extended periods sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Two days/week; 8 hours/day

 

Rate: $25/hour
