Basic Job Functions 

The Summer Advanced Explainer teaches family programs and participates in citizen science projects, career exploration, and outdoor science teaching professional learning opportunities. This includes practicing best teaching practices; working in teams to conduct citizen science investigations, research and presentations; participating in enrichment sessions on career awareness and skill building; and conducting themselves as role models during their work with other Paid Explainers. Advanced Explainers continue to hone their ability to facilitate excellent outdoor education experiences. They model good teaching strategies. Advanced Explainers also participate in weekly enrichment sessions to go behind the scenes at different departments in the Garden. Advanced Explainers are Expected to adhere to all safety practices and procedures while onsite and during any online sessions if needed.

 
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and actively helps to build and maintain an inclusive organizational culture throughout the institution.


Requirements

• Completion of the Intern Explainer commitment in good standing, continued participation as an 
Advanced Explainer is a plus.
• Enrollment in High School.
• Good interpersonal skills, willing to be a team player, interested in learning about citizen science 
and best practices in outdoor science education.
• Must be an excellent teacher and role model for peers.
• Responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, a self-starter. Interest in science, education, 
and/or customer service. Open to learning new things.
• Candidate must be willing to stand and work outdoors in all types of weather.
• Requires standing, bending, and kneeling while teaching children.
• This position requires commitment to three weekly onsite shifts, 9:45am-3:45pm Tuesday-Wednesday and Friday 1-4pm with optional weekend shifts 10:30am-3:30pm (25 hours maximum per week).
• Summer Advanced Explainers MUST participate in: 
o Weekly Schedule beginning July 1, 2024-August 25, 2024 (8 weeks total)
o Assisting with facilitation of Intern Training (August 20-23, 2024)
• Foreign language is helpful, but not essential. 


Pay rate: $16/hr
