Position Summary

The Spring Break Science Camp Educator will collaborate to lead a group of up to 23 children in grades 3-5 in outdoor science investigations, games and explorations of the Enid A Haupt Conservatory and the New York Botanical Garden grounds as well as relevant GreenSchool classroom-based activities during NYC DOE STEM Matters Spring break enrichment camp.  Establish a fun and engaging environment for campers to learn together. Develop and lead the active, hands-on science and nature programs and activities as per the curriculum and collaborate with camp staff team to lead activities in the Children’s Garden and throughout the NYBG landscape.  Supervise and mentor 2-4 Camp Explainers (paid teens) on daily responsibilities and duties.
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.
 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Assist with planning and coordinating daily and weekly camp schedule, including independently planning and implementing science/nature based lessons for the campers based on curriculum.
  • Support Explainers in their role of helping campers with daily tasks; i.e. helping campers keep track of personal items, participate in large and small group activities, and escorting small groups of students to the restroom
  • Build strong relationships with Campers and Camp staff
  • Support Camp Staff to facilitate daily drop-off and pick-up events
  • Maintain close communication with Camp staff to mitigate behavioral and scheduling issues
 
 
Qualifications
Outgoing and friendly personality with excellent oral communications skills essential. Candidate must have experience teaching outdoors with large groups of children with varied learning needs as well as relevant student age group experience based on position.  Candidate must be responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, self- starter and able to mentor others.  A background in science, education and/or museum studies required.  Candidate must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and have experience teaching hands-on, inquiry based lessons with live plants and living organisms.  Foreign language is helpful but not essential.
 
 
Schedule: STARTS March 4, 2025: includes actively participating in developing lessons in March/April; orientation/training on an April evening, 4-6pm week of 4/7-4/11 (date tbd) and leading 1 week of camp, 4/14-4/18/25, Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm.
