Position Summary:

The New York Botanical Garden seeks a part-time Lab Technician to measure bromeliads. The Lab Technician will work closely with NYBG Science and Horticulture to measure bromeliads in the living collection and process bromeliad leaves for a field experiment. The Lab Technician will report to the Associate Curator.

 

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Prepare plant tissue samples for CN analysis using grinding mills and microbalance
  • Weigh and label litter bags for a decay experiment
  • Use photosynthesis analyzers to measure plant gas exchange
  • Measure plant size with a team in a greenhouse setting
  • Enter, organize and quality check data using Microsoft Office, Google Drive and R software
  • Participate in NYBG Science activities and outreach related to the project
  • Communicate promptly and clearly
  • Promote a safe, collaborative working environment

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or international equivalent
  • Some undergraduate science coursework
  • Plant research experience

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand; walk; sit; use hands; handle tools; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low, moderate or loud work conditions. Work indoors in hot and humid conditions. Work safely with spiny plants.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Maximum 20 hours per week during regular business hours Monday – Friday, 9 am - 6 pm with times and dates coordinated in advance with supervisor.

 

14 week appointment duration beginning June 15th 2026

 

Payrate: $25/hour
