Position Summary:

The Interpretive Specialist oversees execution of portions of the interpretive program including signage for special exhibitions and permanent collections, audio tours, mobile experiences, educational videos, and other interpretive projects as needed. Together with the Director of Exhibition Content & Interpretation, the Interpretive Specialist facilitates interpretive planning. The Interpretive Specialist also participates in staff and tour guide training for special exhibitions, collections, and digital experiences, and participates in evaluation of all interpretation initiatives.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • With Director of Exhibition Content & Interpretation, identify interpretive and wayfinding needs for special exhibits and permanent collection.
  • Participate in interpretive planning and development including researching, writing, editing, routing for credits and approval; technology and prototype testing; maintaining, and archiving all material.
  • Develop, update, and maintain content for Bloomberg Connects digital learning app with input from Marketing, Horticulture, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • With guidance from the Director of Exhibition Content & Interpretation, oversee the work of outside contractors designing and producing sign bases and other interpretive exhibition components.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of staff and tour guide training for exhibitions, collections, and digital tools.
  • Track and evaluate (including through on-site visitor surveys and interviews) usage of interpretive tools and develop summative reports for exhibition periods and year-end review.
  • Support the Director of Exhibition Content & Interpretation in developing a strategic plan for the future integration of interpretation and programs into Garden exhibitions and general programmatic operations.
  • Oversee Exhibitions department interns, serve as departmental contact for contracted designers, technology developers, and other consultants as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong research, communication, writing, and proofreading skills as well as project management and planning skills.
  • Comfort balancing multiple projects and priorities while remaining flexible.
  • Basic knowledge of digital content management systems; HTML and web content creation; WordPress and social media platforms desired.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel. Proficiency in Asana or other project management software a plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; 1-3 years’ experience in a museum or non-profit setting developing interpretation and/or educational and community outreach materials.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to move/lift 30 pounds, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to work a variety of hours including occasional nights and weekends.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, occasionally work outdoors in all weather conditions, stand, walk, sit, crouch, kneel, use hand tools, use motorized equipment, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, and lift or move up to 30 pounds.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, with occasional weekend work required

 

        Salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $58,500-$65,000.
