Camp Assistant Educator
Position Summary
The Camp Assist Educator with the implementation of the Summer Science Camp Program will prepare and clean-up materials such as science supplies and craft utensils. Assist with leading groups of up to 18 campers age range (1st grade -8th grade) in explorations of NYBG gardens as well as outdoor games and science investigations under the supervision of the educator. Support 2 Camp Explainers (paid teens) on daily responsibilities and duties.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in training and activity preparation prior to start of camps, June 23-27, 2025
- Open to learning new things and sharing enthusiasm for science and nature with campers
- Assist Camp Educator with implementation of activities and lessons, including set-up, group facilitation and clean-up.
- Help campers with daily tasks; i.e., participating in activities, helping campers keep track of personal items, and escorting small groups of campers to the bathroom
- Outgoing and friendly with the Campers
- Build strong relationships with Campers and Camp Educator
- Must be able to commit to actively participating in orientation/training/prep, June 23-27, 2025, 9am-5pm and leading 6 weeks of camp: June 30-July 18 (no camp July 4th) (entering grades 1-3 or 4-6) 8am-4pm or 10am-6pm schedule and July 28-August 15th (entering grades 1-3, 4-6 or 7-8th) 8am-4pm or 10am-6pm
Qualifications
Outgoing and friendly personality with excellent oral communications skills essential. Candidate must have participated in the Explainer Program and 18+ years old. Candidate must be responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, self-starter and able to work well as a member of a team and especially comfortable working children. An interest in science, nature and/or education, must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather. Foreign language is helpful but not essential.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, traverse across the Garden landscape while teaching groups of children; work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions; be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; kneel or crouch down to plant or child level.
Baseline Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm or 8am – 4pm
Temporary Part Time Position
Pay Rate : $19/hr - $20/hr
