Position Summary:

Children’s Education is seeking a School and Out-of-School Partnership Program Coordinator for two middle and high school enrichment initiatives. The Coordinator will plan and lead programs for:

  1. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs):

-     Six (6) School-Time Green Career Paths at NYBG Days

-     Two (2) Spring and Summer Recess Science workshops

-     Two (2) Family Engagement Evenings

  1. CASA (Cultural After School Adventures):

-          Two (2) On-Site Visits to NYBG (program launch and culmination) for two local middle schools

-          Three (3) 10-Week afterschool workshops at two local middle schools

 

The Coordinator will design a curriculum that engages students in phenomena-based inquiry learning about NYBG’s mission. This includes culturally responsive activities that explore the Garden landscape and its conservation efforts.

 

The Coordinator will plan immersive activities in Plant Science and Conservation, Horticulture, and Education, connecting students with Garden professionals to link science to everyday life and career paths.

 

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design and lead NYBG exhibition thematic workshops, ensuring alignment with Next Generation Science Standards. This includes writing lesson plans, sourcing and maintaining supplies, teaching, and clean up.
  • Implement research-based science instruction to inspire curiosity about the natural world, support their exploration, and guide evidence-based explanations. 
  • Collaborate with GEAR UP and CASA Project Associates.
  • Recruit Garden professionals for student mentor experiences.
  • Document and organize program photographs and lesson plans for institutional memory, funding matches, and sharing with Bronx Institute, NYC Council and broader NYBG community via photo journals and blog submissions.
  • Evaluate and revise programs using student surveys and science journals.
  • Reflect on practices and participate in a professional learning community to enhance science teaching in both garden and classroom settings.
  • Travel to CASA partner school and transport supplies/materials using a personal or NYBG provided vehicle.

 

Qualifications:

  • Potential candidates must have an undergraduate degree with experience in informal outdoor or museum education. Strong science (ecology, botany, or horticulture) background required.
  • Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards and three-dimensional principles of instruction.
  • Excellent oral communication skills are required. Strong organizational skills, the ability to make decisions and work independently and part of team required.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and to be flexible and responsive in a complex, dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience engaging and sparking wonder and curiosity with teen audiences.
  • Must have valid NYS drivers license.
  • Must be available for the following schedule:

-          Six (6) Green Career Path Days 9:45 a.m. 1 p.m.

-          Two (2) School Recess 8:30a.m. – 3:30p.m.

April (Tues. – Thurs.) 15, 16,  17

July (Tues. – Thurs.) 22, 23, 24

-          Three (3) CASA 10-Week Afterschool Sessions 1p.m. – 6p.m.

Weekday 1 To be scheduled(30) 5th grade students

Weekday 3 To be scheduled (30) 6th, 7th , 8th grade students

 

-          Two (2) CASA School Day NYBG Field Trip 9a.m. – 2 p.m.

  • TOTAL POSITION HOURS: 604 hours

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand; walk; sit; use hands, reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low, moderate or loud work conditions.
