Summary:  Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory.  Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory.
1.  Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis.
2.  Responsible for performing high-complexity testing.
3.  Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
4.  Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.
5.  Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab values for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
6.  Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
7.  Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
8.  Maintains appropriate quality control (QC) requirements.
9.  Meets current documentation standards and policies.
10.  Interacts professionally with the Director of Clinical Laboratory, Pathologist and clinical laboratory personnel.
11. Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
12. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
13. Follows standard precautions at all times.
14. Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
15. Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
16. Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, JCAHO, state and other regulatory requirements.
17. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
18. Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
19. Wears appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
20. Uses the principles of AIDET in every customer encounter
21. Completes other duties as assigned and required.
Regulatory Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist in the following specialties: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology.
Language Skills:
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additionally, languages are preferred.
