Summary
Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, coordinates operation of the Phlebotomy Department, including ensuring staffing levels. Advises Supervisor of complaints and problems. This person will also guide and develop the performance of department personnel training and orienting new phlebotomists.  The Lead Phlebotomist will train Phlebotomists using training manuals and checklists. Acts in authority in the absence of the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
Responsibilities
  1. Perform and oversee phlebotomy operations, including specimen collection, patient identification, labeling, aseptic technique, and ensuring high‑quality patient interactions.
  2. Coordinate daily workflow, assigning phlebotomy duties, organizing morning draws, and preparing monthly/daily schedules for supervisor approval.
  3. Train, mentor, and support staff, providing orientation, competency oversight, skill development, and promoting continuous professional growth and teamwork.
  4. Process and manage laboratory specimens, including verification, centrifugation, labeling, LIS receiving, integrity checks, and routing to appropriate testing departments.
  5. Handle computer and LIS tasks, such as monitoring pending logs, placing test orders, printing labels, preparing send‑outs, and using handheld lab equipment and communication devices.
  6. Report and document issues, including safety hazards, discrepancies, system problems, and workplace incidents, while offering solutions to improve workflow and patient care.
  7. Maintain professionalism and compliance, completing required education, following hospital policies, ensuring confidentiality, adhering to safety standards, and representing the organization positively.
  8. Support departmental operations, maintaining inventory, assisting with policy/procedure development, answering calls, providing customer service, and performing additional duties as needed.
Job Qualifications
Education:     High School diploma / GED or equivalent is required.       
Experience:   Must possess a minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
Previous computer experience is preferred.
Effective interpersonal skills are also required.
