Summary:

  • Supervise the daily operations of the Histology section of the laboratory to ensure uninterrupted workflow, quality and timely results, and customer satisfaction. 
  • Interacts with the System Medical Director, AVP, Laboratory Medical Director, Section Medical Directors, Administrative Lab Director, Pathologists, PAs, Residents, Medical Secretaries, and Histology staff to coordinate section activities. 
  • Functions as a model to promote teamwork among staff members and foster positive employee morale.  Achieves organization's established expectations regarding quality of service, teamwork and staff. Is compliant with all Hospital policies and regulatory requirements. 
  • Responsible for communication to all Histology staff via daily huddles and regularly scheduled staff meetings. Pertinent information updates should also be communicated to pathologists, residents, and other hospital campuses. 
  • Oversees scheduling of all Histology staff and approves time off. This includes co-ordination of the pathology resident’s rotations with the Director of the residency program to ensure proper coverage of the department. 
  • Performs all hospital required employee rounding and performance appraisals in a timely manner. Provides employee counseling, coaching, and discipline as necessary. 
  • Is responsible for employee selection within the Histology department. 
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of new programs/systems both within/outside the laboratory as required.  Recommends and implements system changes to increase efficiency and accuracy of workflow. 
  • Implements and oversees compliance with procedures to ensure section compliance with all regulatory agency requirements; i.e, test validation and control slide verification, and to ensure a safe working environment. 
  • Oversees and coordinates the internal and external hazardous waste management. 
  • Oversees section's inventory to ensure proper levels of reagents, controls, standards and disposables. 
  • Oversees, supports or delegates the maintenance of the LIS pathology database. 
  • Coordinates section participation in approved proficiency programs as required by regulatory agencies. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position. 
  • Maintains technical competency in Histology. 
  • Troubleshoots and resolves technical problems related to assigned section.  Functions as a technical consultant to staff and physicians.   
  • Is responsible for section's technical competency program and for ensuring completion of staff training and any continuing education requirements.  In addition, ensures, completion of staff training as appropriate for new procedures. 
  • Develops and implements new procedures/policies and updates and reviews approved section procedures with staff.  Maintains all section procedure manuals. 
  • Evaluates new equipment and method options, negotiates with sales representatives, and submits for approval during the capital budget process. 
  • Monitors financial reports, as well as, service agreements with vendors to ensure financial objectives are met. Maintains the monthly operating budget. 
  • Participates in the laboratory’s Quality program: reviews section event logs and with the Medical Director, establishes monitors to improve quality service.  Provides monthly data and participates at KPI meetings and communicates related information to all stakeholders. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
 

Education: BACHELOR'S DEGREE

Required: Bachelor's Degree.

Experience: five years

Certification: Medical Technologist, ASCP (or equivalent).

Desired (Not Required):
 Knowledge of instrument troubleshooting (experience).  Strong written and verbal skills.
