Purpose: The Lead Surgical Tech is a Technical expert who serves as a resource and liaison for the Operating Room. The Lead is responsible for focusing on the flow, operations, equipment and supplies, and preference cards for given Operating Room specialty services. The Lead Surgical Tech will serve as a preceptor to Surgical Techs in the Operating Room. The population served are children and adults requiring surgery.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Utilizes the Joint commission, AORN, AST standards to support practices within the specialty.
- Serves as a Liaison, preceptor and subject matter expert to the service line.
- Works collaboratively with material management to ensure the equipment and supplies are available prior to the case.
- Ensures performance improvement by assuming responsibility for self-development, contributions and the professional development of peers.
- Maintains asepsis during all phases of the procedure(s).
- Assists the OR RN in preparation and maintenance of the operating room prior to, during and following surgical procedure.
- Acts as the Specialty Expert for the Surgical Services department.
- Provides technical expertise while assisting during surgery.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon during surgery.

- Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
- Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of two (2) years specialty experience in the Operating Room or related field.
- Demonstrates strong leadership attributes.
- Must have knowledge of the equipment and supplies required for the service line.
- Effective communication skills.
- Works well in a team environment.
License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
- Certified Surgical Technologist.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certified.
Working Conditions:
- Manual: significant manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity.
- Occupational: Some occupational risk.
- Physical Effort: Medium to Heavy effort. May exert up to 35 lbs. force.
- Physical Environment: Some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
