Full-Time Physician Assistant – Hepatology & Liver Transplant

Danbury Hospital, part of Northwell Health, has an excellent opportunity for a full-time Physician Assistant (PA) to join our growing Hepatology and Liver Transplant program in Danbury, Connecticut.

Come join us on our exciting journey as we expand the Digestive Health Institute at Nuvance Health in partnership with Northwell Health. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Physician Assistant to become an integral member of our multidisciplinary Hepatology and Liver Transplant team.

The Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with hepatologists, transplant physicians, gastroenterologists, surgeons, advanced practice providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to patients with chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver failure, and patients undergoing evaluation for and recovery following liver transplantation.

This position offers the opportunity to participate in the continued development and growth of a regional hepatology and liver transplant program. Responsibilities will include both outpatient and inpatient care, with opportunities to participate in pre-transplant evaluation, post-transplant management, management of advanced liver disease, and coordination of care across the health system.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in hepatology and liver transplantation and enjoy working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Experience caring for patients with complex liver disease is highly desirable.

Position Highlights

• Full-time, employed Physician Assistant position
• Primarily Monday–Friday schedule
• Combination of outpatient hepatology and inpatient liver disease/transplant responsibilities
• Participation in the evaluation and longitudinal management of liver transplant candidates
• Post-transplant follow-up and management in collaboration with the transplant team
• Management of patients with cirrhosis and complications of advanced liver disease
• Management of portal hypertension, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and other complications of chronic liver disease
• Evaluation and management of patients with abnormal liver tests and chronic liver diseases, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
• Participation in hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance and multidisciplinary management
• Coordination of care with transplant centers and other specialists as appropriate
• Collaboration with hepatologists, transplant surgeons, gastroenterologists, hospitalists, nursing, nutrition, pharmacy, social work, and other members of the multidisciplinary team
• Opportunity to participate in the development of innovative programs focused on metabolic liver disease and comprehensive liver care
• Weekend rotation may be required; no routine overnight call responsibility

Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant will provide comprehensive clinical care to patients across the spectrum of liver disease, including:

• New and established outpatient hepatology visits
• Inpatient consultation and management of patients with advanced liver disease
• Pre-transplant evaluation and optimization of liver transplant candidates
• Post-transplant follow-up and coordination of care
• Management of complications of cirrhosis, including ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, gastrointestinal bleeding, and portal hypertension
• Monitoring and management of patients with chronic viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, cholestatic liver disease, and metabolic liver disease
• Liver cancer surveillance and coordination of care for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
• Medication management and patient education
• Coordination of laboratory testing, imaging, procedures, and specialty referrals
• Patient and family education regarding chronic liver disease and transplantation
• Close communication with referring physicians and transplant centers
• Participation in quality improvement, clinical education, and program development initiatives

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
• Eligible for or currently holding a Connecticut Physician Assistant license
• Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration and Federal DEA registration
• At least 2 years of clinical experience preferred, with experience in hepatology, gastroenterology, transplant medicine, hospital medicine, or internal medicine strongly preferred
• Experience caring for patients with cirrhosis or other complex liver disease preferred
• Liver transplant experience strongly preferred but not required
• Excellent clinical judgment and ability to manage medically complex patients
• Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and care-coordination skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Demonstrated commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care

Compensation & Benefits

Annual Salary Range: $130,000 – $175,000

Compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibilities.

The position includes a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits, paid time off, CME allowance, and professional licensing/dues support.
