Job Summary:
Performs specific maternal, infant, and surgical care activities as well as OR surgical technologist duties and non-professional activities under the direction of a registered nurse. Under the direct supervision of an RN, the Labor and Delivery surgical technologist provides care necessary to meet physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of the neonate and women of childbearing age consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the VBMC nursing department and hospital administration. The surgical technologist will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the technical competencies and provision of care to the patient population served in the division of Maternal Child Health. Follows approved policies and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Collects and utilizes consistently, available data necessary for the proper preparation of the surgical suite for specific surgical procedures.

2. Utilizes the Operating Room schedule, M.D.'s preference cards and basic knowledge of procedures in preparing surgical supplies, instruments and equipment for intended procedure.

3. Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of sterile/aseptic technique:
Always opens supplies aseptically, always adheres to established policies/procedures pertaining to dress code, infection control and universal precautions.

4. Performs proper sponge, sharps and instrument counts according to established policy/ procedure as demonstrated by the lack of reported occurrences.

5. Utilizes supplies, equipment and time in the most cost-effective manner by having the proper equipment and supplies ready for each procedure.

6. Consistently checks all equipment for working order and immediately reports or corrects unsafe conditions.

7. Verifies exposure to a sterilization process and integrity of sterile packaging.

8. Assists with appropriate preparation of instruments/equipment for decontamination or terminal sterilization, assists in restocking of supplies/equipment.

9. Adheres to Infection Control and Quality Assurance Policy and Procedures at all times.

10. Identifies problems in the delivery of patient care and refers them to the appropriate circulating Nurse/Nurse Manager.

11. Adheres to all safety regulations reporting any variances to supervisor immediately.

12. Reports immediately all incidents, irregularities, unsafe conditions, equipment and/or unusual occurrences to supervisor.

14. Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.

15. Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

· Requires high school diploma or equivalent.

· Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES- accredited program and holds and maintains Certified Surgical Technologist certification.

· Completed a military surgical technology program

· 15 hours of continuing education (CE) each year.

License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:

· Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required through a nationally accredited educational program, such as National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
